• Raspberry pi4: Retropie unable to detect Pandora 3d controller

@mitu Thanks! I found the real issue why it was not detecting after some research. Three points to note:

My Pandora 3d's top USB port must be used to connect with Raspberry pi4. Pandora must be powered ON to detect the controller. Once Pandora connects, Pandora goes to "Controller" mode(a full screen message shows up) and disables its controller on Pandora but activates on raspberry pi.

Now, I am using both systems on my arcade cabinet side by side using an HDMI switcher.

Hopefully these would help other people. :)

    I've been using rclone-v1.56.0.

Latest release suggests v1.59.1 is available, but I don't know if that is really needed.

Just curious if this is now definitely required due to changes in protocols or whatever.

    Please and thank you.

    OK, finally figured it out!

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/25149143/linux-kernel-consoleblank-argument-ignored

Needed to add export QT_QPA_PRESERVE_CONSOLE_STATE=1 to the autostart file. It seems the consoleblank=0 gets overriden by Qt applications. Seems like a bit of an undesirable behaviour but glad it works now.

Update for anyone who is curious, I ended up buying an "8BitDo Adapter 2". After updating the adapter's firmware using 8BitDo's firmware updater, the adapter makes it pretty easy to connect a Nintendo Switch SNES controller to a Retropie.

Do you really have 2500 custom override configs?

Rather more than that, it turns out :D

    rpicfgs.jpg

Obviously not all of those would be potentially affected by a Retroarch change, but goodness knows how many might be, and I never want to go through AspectRatioGate again. Even now, years later, I'm still finding games with the screen all wrong.

(I have CFGs for all sorts of reasons, in many cases it's as simple as a bezel but even those often need custom tweaks.)

And yeah, I have a backup but at 256GB it takes two days just to write the memory card. (And it's not really practical for a case like this, because if a new Retroarch broke everything the only suitable backup is a complete image file. What I actually have as a day-to-day backup are copies of the ROMS and CONFIGS folders, which can be updated in seconds, but that would be no use for a Retroarch meltdown. You can't save a 256GB image file every night.)

Anyway, that's my hangup to deal with, I'd really like the new feature but since it's basically only for two SNES ports that already run fine in MAME I'll have to weigh up the risk, and the terror of possibly having to go through the infinite pain of configuring WonderSwan games again. Thanks for the help :)

@roslof when you have the chance, can you try installing the latest emulationstation-dev from source ? There's a fix added that should help speed up the initial loading.

@mitu as you would expect, with Last Played toggled true, load times are no longer in excess of 50 seconds for me. Cheers to you for the fix!

@mitu Good suggestion, but still no luck. I even verified the setting in the Retroarch Menu-Settings-User Interface, and although the setting shows active, it does not seem to have helped. (The behavior is unchanged)

Good, because that was going to be my next question anyway. So this will fix two birds with one stone.

However, is asking where to "source" these audio samples in the same boat as asking how to get/where to get ROMs to download?

    UPDATE:

Never mind, I found them and now things are all good. Thanks!

    @psun03 read https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroArch/comments/szlxkz/i_want_2_controllers_active_on_port_1/

A somehow recent version of retroarch is required, so make sure you are using the latest version available on retropie.

@jollster101 Nope, ever was what I meant - as on my Raspberry 3B with 2 connected gamepads, each of them can navigate ES and launch items, but only the gamepad for player one can use the configured "hotkey"-features (exit emulator, open libretro-menu, save/load state, etc.).

If that's not possible with your IPac configured as 2 Gamepads, more Info is needed: What IPac (pre or post 2015) and which Firmware/Mode??

How are the controlls detected by ES? What does "configure input" states if you opt for it in the "?? Devices detected... press a button on the one to be configured" window?

Some older (Pre 1.5) Firmware with Gamepad enabled Mode where not "usable" on retropie as such (I think those may have been the old one currently called Mixed-Mode Firmware (which nowadays needs a seperate version of the Winipac tool for configuration)) ... Between the old Firmwares (the times with different firmwares for gamepad and keyboard only setups), may have been in the time around 2019/2020, there where some changes in the naming of firmware-/&modes on Ultimarcs behalve and sadly I haven't archived the "inbetweens" and properly named my old-archive of the tools/firmwares to use the terms in a correct/everyone knows whats meant way :/

My pi just crash randomly in menus after around 1-2 minutes sometime less...

You mean just letting EmulationStation idling, without any actions performed, or when you open the EmulationStation menu(s) and go through the options ?

@alan-miller3 said in need help understanding screen size/orientation etc.:

    @dankcushions

    ok, physically my display's visible area is 15 x 12 inches. That's a 5:4 ratio.
So I changed my screen resolution to 1280x1024@60Hz (also a 5:4 ratio) and rebooted.

if that’s the native resolution of the screen then fine

vide_rotation=3 is still set in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg

After starting a game and hitting tab, the video options offer 3:4 or 7:9 or cocktail.

tab should get you to the MAME menu (not retroarch(. you probably don’t want to to be changing options there.

Disabling any of the options (backdrops, overlays, bezels, marquees, etc.) doesn't seem to do anything.

because bezel project adds retroarch bezels, not MAME ones. how did you install it? presumably the same script permits the disabling/removal of the bezels.

or did you use a pre-configured image?

    new2.jpg

If I revert the video_rotation (back to 0) in /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg
I still get the same 11 x 11 screen with "Arcade" bezels but without rotation so players 1 and 2 are both looking at the screen from the side.

Is it the fact that the original game was intended to be on a square screen?

no, it a a 4:3 crt screen rotated on its side (so effectively 3:4)

I wasn't able to find the base /boot/config file anywhere

Just download the RetroPie image for your Pi model and open it with 7zip, you can look at the boot partition and extract the default config.txt without writing the image on a sdcard/usb stick.

@mitu Well that can be arranged as I tested the VLC mode and it still worked right, however there's still no game info displayed.

What could possibly be causing that? Something wrong with the chosen fonts? The font files? The resolution I'm forcing it to display at (resolution mode is meant for a screen installed in an Arcade1Up gen 3 cabinet)? I'm trying to think of anything that might mess with its subtitles and can't come up with anything.

EDIT: FINALLY figured it out. In video screensaver settings, VLC Resolution needs to be set to Max. Doing that finally shows the game info. Gonna guess this has something to do with video mode, but I don't know for certain. Either way, that fixed it.

@mitu said in Usb drive mounting problems:

Just assign a letter in Windows to the partition and erase the folder on it.

So yeah, apparently that was the issue, that somehow a retropie-mount folder was also in the EFI partition:

    b69d38b3-7559-4999-a9cb-f8773c110bf9-image.png

Assigning letter H: to the EFI partition and checking through admin in powershell I can see that there is a folder structure and it looks the same as what I see on the desktop on the RPI400 when it fails to load the HDD. I just removed everything from H:

So let's see how it behaves from now on. If I don't come back to this thread asume that it was solved.

Thank you very much both of you for your help!
