I have done loads of Googling and I still can't get Defender or Gauntlet to run.

I know I need lr-mame2003 which uses MAME 0.78 ROM set.

My /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg (with a grep on mame contains):

      <name>mame-advmame</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-advmame %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme>
      <name>mame-libretro</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-libretro %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme>
      <name>mame-mame4all</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-mame4all %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme> <name>mame-advmame</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-advmame %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme>
      <name>mame-libretro</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-libretro %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme>
      <name>mame-mame4all</name>
      <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all</path>
      <command>/opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh 0 _SYS_ mame-mame4all %ROM%</command>
      <theme>mame</theme>

There is no lr-mame2003 in there. Does mame-libretro cover this? Have googled "install lr-mame2003 retropie" and get very confusing results.

I have the following directories on the pi:
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/arcade (where a working nemeses.zip lives)
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/arcade/advmame
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/arcade/mame2003
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/mame-advmame
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/mame-libretro
      /home/pi/Retropie/roms/mame-mame4all

      My questions are:

      1. Do I have lr-mame2003 installed?
2.Where do I put the zip files?

Relax dude. Do you already have the roms? An another thing I want to say is, you have the emulators and the roms folders. Forget about the emulator folder, just copy 'n paste the roms to the correct rom folder. For mame you need to upload them the arcade folder.

Better yet, forget about lr-mame2003. Use the lr-fbalpha emulator instead. Search on google for: FB Alpha v0.2.97.39. The first result should be a site with the torrent for this romset. Download it and copy it to the FBA rom folder.

If you're on Windows just use SMB for transferring. When in Windows Explorer write down the following in the dir bar (or however they call it):

            \retropie

Hit enter. You'll see a couple folders, just open the ROMS folder, there will be many folders (amiga, nes etc). In your case if you're planning to use the FBA emu (I assume you downloaded FB Alpha v0.2.97.39 romset), just copy those zip files to the FBA folder.

Now restart the Pi, sit back and have fun. Oh an make sure the standard emulator for FBA is set on lr-fbalpha. You do this when you load up a game, it will say press "A" blablabla. Just press that button and there should be a config screen which allows you to set the default emu.

Let me know how if you have any problems.

                @petrorie

Can we just open the SD card with retropie writed , on Windows with card reader, and simply copy the downloaded romset to the FBA rom folder ?
I´m newbie. I read the first installation guide .
Tonight i will setting up retropie for the first time, i just want arcade games. So , it´s not necessary to have both romset? 0.78 and FB Alpha v0.2.97.39) The FB Alpha v0.2.97.39 contain the games of 0.78?

no. romsets aren't forward or backward compatible. each romset will only work properly for a specific version of MAME/FBA.

That's not possible. The SD uses UNIX formatted partitions that are not directly readable in Windows.
You can access the ROM folders on your Pi from Windows explorer thru your home network (samba share).
