MAME ROW #48 - The King of Fighters 2000
-
I have to say I'm really impressed by what they were able to do with Tube Fighter in 1984. It's going to be a tough decision this week.
-
This may well be the first chance in weeks I've had to play some, and the mere mention of the pewpew means I'll try my utmost to get on it tonight:)
-
I might be missing something but this is what off the wall (1991 game of that name) looks like with my offtwall.zip ROM!
Have I got the right one?
Edit: ah, I think the ROM name is wrong, should be otwalls.zip? (Although that's the 1984 game of that name)
1991 Game: Not a bad breakout/arkanoid clone but too twitchy on my digital controller.
1984 Game: Infuriatingly crazy control system (probably a lot better with a twistable Ikari warriors type control, or at least a seperate spinner). I liked the intro music though. Nice idea.
I liked Tube Panic for about 2 minutes, after which it became a bit of a vomitorium for me. For some reason these sorts of games always make me feel really nauseous. I couldn't play Dark Forces on the PC past the level with the liquid moving floor effect, and the original Descent had me reaching for the sick bag within seconds!
So The King of Fighters wins my vote. Luckily it's an excellent game, although for some reason only 2 of the 4 buttons work for me in LR-MAME2003, I had to use advmane-0.94.0 to get all the buttons working properly.
Still not 100% sure what I'm doing, but it's fun.

@gtbfilms lol I finally got to play, although I'll pay double tomorrow for the late night:( yes, I've been playing the same breakout type game waiting for the tennis version to crop up!! At least I got 17397 on it before I realised! Looks like it may also be two player which could be fun.
Yet again, another game for my thumb mouse, although oddly enough actually plays better with controller. I had a go at the sente version in the video also, hope that makes it into another mame row week!! I'll be playing that one two player if I can get the hang of it, it makes me laugh my head off just trying to control it!)Tube Panic is a cross between watching Lawnmower Man and the old intro to Dr Who. I quite like its gameplay too.
King of Fighters? Yes I love a beat'em up, but at this time of night too much like a random button mash. That may change as it actually plays really nicely.
Mmm so it's a tough call. I'm going to go for Tube Panic.
Before you say it, no pewpew was harmed in this session, and didn't sway me at all:) but as it not only seems the best option for a comp, but also a bit more retro (and that sums me up really) I think it gets my vote this week.
Frankly, I'm just happy to be able to participate and play and vote! -
All my NEOGEO games runs off the FBA romset, so technically I cannot participate in this MAME ROW if KOF wins, can I?
-
@andershp sure you can. mame2003 supplies the pool of games. you can emulate them however you want assuming the settings are the same (dip switches etc) which they almost certain will.
-
@andershp look at the 2nd note in the OP:
- There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
-
Voting is very close! If you haven't voted already, please do so. The results will be announced at 10 Eastern. (2.5 hours after this post has been created)
-
This week's winner is The King of Fighters 2000
-
@obsidianspider A good opportunity for me to learn the special moves.
-
@udb23 Ha! I wondered why this random chap would turn up and join in the fray!
-
@udb23 I'm awful at fighting games. It's even more difficult for me with a D-Pad.
-
@gtbfilms You figured it out, but there are two arcade games called "Off The Wall". The original video posted here is otwalls.zip or "Off The Wall -- Sente". The Sente game is actually really fun with two players. The standard controls included a L-R stick and a spinner for each player (2 players). The spinner controls the racquet arm which you can spin around and around like Tron, and the stick controls player position.
Off The Wall -- Sente is actually one of the reasons why my cabinet has two spinners. My grade school friends and I used to play this head-to-head over and over at the local arcade. It's like a combination of racquetball and tennis. One of the fun parts was that if you win, you get to play again while your opponent (or new challenger has to drop a coin to play! I don't expect many people have the arcade control setup to play it with two-players, but you could map an analog stick and a d-pad to play it.
Anyway, OTWALLS is different than OFFTWALL as you noticed, but I wanted to throw in a quick thumbs up for OTWALLS!

Pretty sure this record isn't going to stand for long but here's my first couple of attempts.

MAME ROW #49 is live!
-
A little late and off-topic (and with a touch of "no-one-gives-a-f$%#k") post.
When I was trying the games for MAME #48 I thought Tube Panic would win and tried it more than the others. Here's my best score: 39342
