RPI HDMI 1080p Resolution

@mwkenna I had a similar problem just the other day, wouldn't work with cec and all the aspect went skew whiff as well. I trouble shooted, checked different versions of my sd card raspi setups (which were different). I held off making adjustments as the kids had all been playing when I was out. Turned out they'd changed the picture mode on the tv which messed up all the cec and aspect and other modes. One press of the remote button and all was back to normal.
Not suggesting this is the issue, but it was a simple fix once I'd exhausted all the ways I'd usually have approached it. Luckily I hadn't played with any other settings.

@mwkenna so in the /boot/config.txt set hdmi group to one and hdmi mode to 16. Then make sure safe mode isnt enabled in there as that automatically forces 640x480. Then follow the advice from the post above mine.

Thanks for the info so far - the first thing I checked was the TV picture mode first off and this had not changed from 16:9. I have tried 1/16 in the config and this gives the closest result although there is still screen clipping - its definitely 1080p with this setting but the top and bottom of the screen are clipped. I have tried various overscan settings which don't really seem to do much.
I will post a config.txt later tonight - I also have a spare SD card which I plan to quick-install RPI and see if I get the same problems (could be a TV issue after-all I suppose).

@mwkenna changing the overscan for the four directions should fix it. You may need to use - negative numbers depend which direction your issue is. Start with 100 so it is smaller than tv. Then adjust in increments of 5 until you find the correct number.

@edmaul69 I have played with those settings although they don't seem to make any difference? During the boot of the RPI I can see that they do indeed shrink/enlarge the display but once EmulationStation is loaded there is always screen clipping on the top/bottom. It's almost like the settings are overwritten once the GUI is loaded?

@mwkenna hashtag # out disable overscan if you have that set in the config.txt then adjust.

@edmaul69 Already tried that - I will post a snip of config.txt later tonight - I really have tried most combinations of "stuff" from the forum posts.

Right, so an update - absolutely any overscan setting (even a crazy high value like 400) applies to the RPI loading screen and retropie splash but as soon as EmulationStation loads, it's all ignored and everything is off screen. I am re-doing another SD card and we will see where the problem lays.

@mwkenna that's what happens when overscan_scale is not set to 1.

Ok guys, I have just redone the SD card and it's working perfect - as far as I can see the config file is identical to what I had it as. I have no idea what happened there but to be honest, its now working and the kids are happy so all is well.
