I'm running Ubuntu 16.4 X86 version of Retropie.
But because I use a small ssd for the operating system and Retropie/Emulation Station, it would be useful to store the roms on an external drive.
I see how it's done on the Pie3 but how about on this setup.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

The docs cover this scenario - take a look at https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive
