RetroPie X86, Pulseaudio, HDMI and the ES Menu

Howdy folks,
I've trawled through the forums and not yet found a match.
I'm running RetroPie 4.3 (But I also had this problem on 4.2)
(This was compiled following the instructions uner the x86 installer section)
This is running on a x86 PC with a HDMI soundcard (nVidia 1050). Xubuntu 17.04 and it's almost all working :-)
I'm running audio via pulseaudio and it's all set to pass audio through. Games work fine. Unfortunately the ES menu itself is totally silent.
Where should I be looking?
es_settings.cfg looks like the likely place, but I've been unable to find what I should be changing, or any documentation on what the various values can be.
(The line <string name="AudioDevice" value="Master" /> looks promising, but what to change it to?)

Any help gratefully appreciated.

I kind of missed this at the time, and even though I don't have a proper solution, I may at least be able to explore options with you.

I suppose the first question is what sound do you expect ES to make? Are you referring to videos, or navigation sounds? If the latter, that is theme dependent, so an option can be that the theme you're using does not use audio assets?

Assuming that you've determined that that isn't the issue, the three values that that setting takes are:

PCM
Speaker
Master

but, truth be told, those are platform dependent. If you don't have a menu entry in "Sound Settings" to change that, it might be because they're not supported for Linux as a platform. You may try to change these manually at your own risk and see what works and what fails miserably, and report back :)

I'd try PCM first.

Sorry for the lengthy delay in replying...
IRL got in the way :-)

OK so it's definitely only the navigation sounds missing. I've tried several themes and none seem to have sound.

I'm guessing they must not be supported in Ubuntu as i don't seem to have them in the Sound Settings menu item.

Oh well :-)
