MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
Notes:
-
We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.
-
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
-
Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.
These "rules" are constantly being improved!

Went with Birdie. My trigger finger needs a week of rest after R-Type, and this game looks kind of alternate.
-
Gave these a try last night.
Magician Lord seems to be a sort of cross between a poor man's Altered Beast and a generic 2D sidescrolling adventure game. Not bad, but not remarkable.
I quite liked the idea of Birdie King 2, it would be a nice change of pace. However I couldn't work out how to control it. All I could do was hit the ball a few feet at a time before running out of shots.
Lightning Fighters seems a bit generic as well but decently executed.
As I can't work out how to control Birdie King 2, Ms suspect it probably needs a trackball, I'm going to go for Lightning Fighters this week.

This week's winner is Lightning Fighters

This is one tough game. I only managed to level 2 once, with a top score of 55010.
It seems to be the 'Dragon Laser' is a much better smart bomb type weapon than the 'Particle Beam' - it stays on screen longer and does more damage. For the primary weapon I thought the 'S' power up gave a nice spread weapon and as most enemies can be destroyed with a single hit, it was better than the 'V' rapid fire single rocket primary weapon
although I'm guessing it becomes more useful later on with tougher enemies.The idle demo seems to show a slave unit assisting the player, but I never got anywhere near obtaining that.
I'll give it a few more plays but this is a tough one!

I'm improving!

@gtbfilms It isn't the fastest shooter :D
Good to play if you consumed some drinks and your reaction time decreases. -

And you know: Don't drink and fly ;)
But today I've some spare time ... The game itself is funny - will you also take part on this? -
@meleu I am going to have intermittent forum access this week, would you be able to run MAME ROW #60? If not, I will be updating at odd hours.
-
@obsidianspider I will do that. ;-)
-
@meleu Thank you, sir!

@obsidianspider MAME ROW #60 post done: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/post/117802
But I'm getting a server error from strawpoll.me... :(
Maybe I will try to find another web poll service later...

I was just trying a few games at random tonight and came across Gunbird 2 - it's quite similar to Lightning Fighters (bullet hell vertical shooter) but is better executed all round.
I'd never seen this (or the original Gunbird) before, I'm guessing perhaps they only appeared in Japan?
Anyway, for fans of these types of games, I recommend trying out Gunbird 2. Runs really nicely on a Rpi 3.
