That’s an issue with 3rd party knockoff controllers. You sure it’s an official Sony one?
-
says sony on back model cehczc2u
-
ohh it must be a really well made knock off damn

I had an identical experience a few weeks ago after buying a 'CECHZC2U' on eBay. All of the branding is Sony, but I found that it's just a really good knock-off. Everything you describe is what I observed (constant vibrate when USB connected, unable to pair, etc.) - I eventually found that it's a Shanwan. I installed the alternate PS3 driver (the one that states Shanwan in the menu description), and it was immediately able to pair.
The controller actually works very well, and my three genuine Sony PS3 controllers still work. However, as a result of the driver change, only the Shanwan will lock on a controller number LED - the Sony controllers will sync and take a number, but the four LEDs just perpetually blink.

@bcarp where so i find the shanwan driver is it in the retropie set up under drivers

Use the "customhidsony" driver from the RetroPie-Setup drivers menu to solve the vibrating on USB. To pair via BT, you still need the ps3controller driver, but you need to use the "shanwan" version.

appreciate the help you guys

@sjlurker2018 i have seen hundreds of knockoff controllers in the biz. If you post a pic of the back sticker showing some of the plastic around it, and an angled view of the 4 led’s i can tell you for sure if its real or fake.

It doesn't help you, but I managed to buy a genuine PS3 dual shock controller for not much off a carboot. I only wanted the controller but seller also said it came with the PS3 which turned out to have water damage when it was opened up and hardware jailbroken. I use and run my games off external hard drive now and still works perfectly after much stress testing.
The PS3 controller should have been detected straight away. Setting up the buttons is the hard part
Chinese copies work on the PS3 but cause all sorts of issues in RetroPie, as you've found out. Trying to get a genuine Sony PS3 dualshock isn't that easy as a LOT of people still want them. Not for a price you're happy to pay for a 2nd had item anyway. They keep their price pretty high as they are still so popular

@steptoe tea man ive noticed ... kind of a luck thing now

If it's not showing up in the drivers menu, you need to update your Retropie-Setup script.
