    Hello together,

I'm still wondering if there is a way to determine the firmware version inside my 8Bitdo NES30 pro controller, without flashing a new one.
because actually everything seems to work fine with the pad, I don't want to risk checking out some other, downloadable ones.
    (-> never change a running system :-D )

    any ideas ?

If you load the firmware flashing utility, it tells you the version of the firmware on the controller when you plug into USB. You don't have to click GO or whatever. You can keep it as-is.

        thank you caver01 !
I should have been brave and selected a firmware file to flash.
didn't knew that there will be another confirmation step before flashing.

but I encountered a curious behaviour.

as I started the flash utility, connected the pad (in boot mode, with yellow flashing led's) and selected a firmware file, the utility showed me that fw 4.01 is already flashed at the device.

but after I started the process a second time, the firmware selection box came up immediately and after selecting a file I got such a screen:

and: I ended up in an endless loop, so that I couldn't close the 8bitdo tool out of the application (only thru the task manager).

anyhow, at least it worked once (at the first attempt).

        cheers,
        Jeff

@jeffjordan Well, none of us here can really speak to the quality/effectiveness of their flashing utility. I use the mac version, so my experience will be different anyway. I do remember reading in their instructions that you have to boot the controller in a certain way to flash it. Sorry, I don't recall the details.

            Of course not !
this is a retropie related forum and my question was "at the edge" of being off-topic.
just wanted to inform other users with my reply about the curious behaviour.
and yes: you need to get into the mode where you can flash the pad, you need to press <power> & <pair> for a few seconds, until the pad led's flash yellow; afterwards you can connect the pad to the usb port...
