Raspberry Pi, Xbox online gaming, and Xkai

So it looks like one can now play Xbox with friends and others online using a Raspberry Pi.
I've used Xkai many times before and it's absolutely wonderful, and also completely free.
This is really exciting news since it means more portability because a computer is no longer necessary.
It seems to require "Raspbian with Desktop" and "Etcher".
Is there any chance of compiling the requirements for Retropie or perhaps a way to dual boot a Pi device?

Looking over the documentation for Xkai, it doesn't really require a desktop environment to run, and Etcher is a generic SD card writing tool, used to install Raspbian Linux on a Raspberry PI from scratch.
The only gotcha for this set-up is networking the Xbox and the Pi, which I assume is needed for creating the system-link connection. If you have a RetroPie installation, I think you only need to perform steps 5b, 6 and 7 - install the software and make it run at boot.

I'm not exactly quite sure what I'm doing here. :(
I currently have 2017-11-29-raspbian-stretch flashed on a 32 GB SD card after using Etcher for Windows.
I don't have an extra Micro SD at the moment.
Can I boot this in RetroPie if I plug it into a USB port on my Pi?

@addison It's not clear what you want to install: RetroPie or this software (Xkai) ?
If it's RetroPie, then https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/, if it's the other, then follow the instructions on their site. -
I already have RetroPie on a 64 GB micro SD card.
Their instructions are to flash the Raspberry Stretch also on a micro SD card, which I don't currently have an extra one as of now.
I'm asking if I can use a SanDisk Ultra 32 GB Class 10 SDHC UHS-I Memory Card with the USB port instead.
If not, I guess I'll buy another micro SD card online, and switch it out with the one I have using RetroPie every time I'd like to try this on my Xbox.
I was hoping for a more convenient solution than that though.
Does that make any sense?

Try using the OS you already have and make a backup first. Note that RetroPie is not - yet - supported on Raspbian Stretch.

Okay.
So after scanning my 64 GB Micro SD card that I'm using with RetroPie, it appears that I currently am using 45 GB of data on it.
There should be enough room to also add Raspberry Stretch on this, yes?
But if I flash that image on the card, I'll lose everything previously stored on it, correct?
It would be really great if there was a menu icon in Emulation Station like I have with Kodi or with any of the emulators.
I could simply choose Rasberry Stretch from the selection screen and go from there.
Is there an easy solution in getting it to work like that?

No. Raspbian Stretch is the OS itself, you cannot start it as a program from Emulationstation.
As I said, leave aside the Stretch dependency and see if the program installs on the current OS you have. -

I'm sorry for needing to be baby stepped on something that should be fairly simple.
Anyway, it states to extract the Xkai download to /home/pi/Downloads
There wasn't a Downloads folder so I made one and placed that kaiEngine-7.4.31 folder at that spot.
I'm doing good so far, yes?
It then wants me to right click the kaiengine file and change the permissions.
Since I'm skipping out on using Stretch, I'm left with using WinSCP on my Windows computer.
So here is what I'm currently looking at.
What all check boxes need to be clicked on that Properties popup thingy?

I think I've done everything correctly so far and finished all of the steps up through #5.
When I start my Pi now, it hangs on the following screen:
Based on #5, step 11: Your Raspberry Pi will now automatically start XLink Kai when turned on and will restart kai if it crashes.
So I guess that means I no longer have Emulation Station with this method. :(
Any ideas on how to resolve for that?

I guess the
/etc/rc.local
script no longer exits and blocks the start sequence. Can you post the contents of the file ? -

@mitu With your exact replacement line, and also removing the previous sudo command that it had, I'm back in Emulation Station. :)

What exactly did that do though?
I would like for the script to only execute when I click on an icon or something of it in Emulation Station.
