Fresh install of official image on pi3, put a bunch of roms on. Using Logitech F710 controllers, buttons work on all consoles, but not in mame-libretro. The dpad works in mame, as do select/coin and start/start, but the button a/1, b/2, x/3 etc. do not.

    Any idea what to check?

I just did it the easy way and defined the buttons in mame itself

try deleting default.cfg or any per-game .cfgs as per https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/lr-mame2003#mame-menu

Thanks! Deleting the .cfg files did it. I was dumb and left out the fact that, though it was a clean install of retropie, I coped my roms dir over from another machine. I either forgot or never new that mame2003 stored those cfg files below the roms dir.
