Best Rom Hacks?
-
@quicksilver Oh sorry, you are right. I will do this later.

I am still searching for rom hacks and homebrew and found some truly awesome hacks! I can't believe it! In example a Super Mario World (1) hack, which lets you play Yoshi like in Yoshis Island, with awesome egg throwing mechanics and such! And the music and graphics are fantastic. Same for the Wario hack, with his dash attack. Here we go:
Mods and Hacks
- 100 Rooms of Enemies (Arcade) / based on Mario World (SNES)
- Captain Toad Treasure Tracker / based on Mario World (SNES) -- Note: Check this out!
- Super Mario Logic / based on Mario World (SNES) -- Note: Check this out!
- Warios Adventure / based on Mario World (SNES) -- Note: Check this out!
- Yoshi's Strange Quest / based on Mario World (SNES) -- Note: Check this out!
- Cube / based on Zelda 3 (SNES)
- Boss Blitz / based on DKC (SNES)
- Super Mario Bros 3 Mix / based on Mario 3 (NES) -- Note: Starts boring and gets better.
- Super Mario Ultimate / based on Mario 3 (NES)
- Burst Chaser X Air Sliding / based on Mega Man 4 (NES)
- Minus Infinity / based on Mega Man 4 (NES)
- Rogue Dawn / based on Metroid (NES) -- Note: Check this out!
- The Legend of Link / based on Zelda 1 (NES)
Edit: Added some more games.

This is pretty cool:

I dont know if anyone has mentioned it but Goldfinger 64 (N64) is really cool. Its a little much for the pi though. It even has its on custom box art:

I don't think this topic should ever die. ROM hacking is contently evolving, so there will always be new and interesting ROM hacks to try out and play.
That being said, here are some more hacks!
I haven't fully play them yet, but I suggest them based off what I have heard and I really liked what did play.
The S Factor Sonia and Silver / based on Sonic the Hedgehog (MD/Geneses)
Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog / based on Sonic the Hedgehog (MD/Genesis)
Super Mario Bros. 3 Mix / based on Super Mario Bros.3 (NES)
Dragoon X Omega - Gold Edition / based off Dragon Warrior (NES) - Could be considered home-brew that used Dragon Warrior as the starting point. -
I'm looking for a good Rom Hack for Super Mario World. I see there are a ton listed on romhacking.com. Does anyone have a recommendation?
-
@hooperre Look at my list above. There are some good ones. What type of hack are you searching? Hardcore levels? Cool looking graphics? Interesting level design or a complete rechange game?
In my list games with the note / based on Mario World
-
@thelostsoul Whoops. Thanks. I would say interesting level design or cool graphics I suppose.
-
-
@hooperre Super Mario World: Return To Dinosaur Land Series is pretty good. It basically a SMW Expansion with new levels that isn't ball busting hard like most SMW hacks. Actually has a learning curve with only once level that required save states for nearly perfect jumps.
-
Thanks, @lilbud + @Triquick! Will be grabbing both of those.
Anyone know where I can make a bounty for someone developing Rom Hacks?
I'm looking for:
-
Master of Monsters for Genesis with the turn limit removed similar to the Masters of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia one.
-
Shining Force (any/all versions) with other music because it's sooooooo repetitive.
-
(Doesn't fit here, but...) RetroPie lr-Nestopia with power pad emulation which is in standalone Nestopia (I'm pretty sure) for the PC but not in RetroPie's version to my knowledge.
Thanks!

Master of Monsters for Genesis with the turn limit removed similar to the Masters of Monsters: Disciples of Gaia one.
If this can be accomplished via a game genie code, there's a software utility that can alter the ROM permanently. Alternately, of course you could just use the game genie code.
RetroPie lr-Nestopia with power pad emulation which is in standalone Nestopia (I'm pretty sure) for the PC but not in RetroPie's version to my knowledge.
I'd love this also. A proactive way to get this on the radar is to open an issue as a feature request over at the 0ldsk00l's nestopia github. If you don't want to for whatever reason, let me know and I'll open one. Once open, I believe a bounty can be set.

I tried to lock in the game genie code via patch, but for whatever reason the game doesn't start if it's applied that way. I can revisit it and try again. I figured someone smarter than me could delay the change until the game started somehow.

I wouldn't mind opening one at all, but I'm only somewhat familiar with GitHub and stuff. In the interest of getting it solved, if it's no bother to you to do it, maybe that's the route to go. Just let me know! : )

Done and done. I thought it might be best to open the issue at the libretro fork. We'll see how it's received.

Sonic 3 Complete,
Mario Land 2 DX.

I just read this:
http://retrogamingmagazine.com/2018/04/10/fan-updates-nes-castlevania-with-new-graphics-and-sound/
Looks impressive. Unsure if it'd run on any of our emulators, but it looks rather nice!

It indeed looks impressive. But I can't find a link or the hack itself. In the article, I even can't find the title of the hack or even the maker of it. These are essential informations lacking. Did he even check if the game is at romhacking.net? I then headed over to romhacking.net and searched for Castlevania hacks in 2018 and found out the subtitle "Opposing Bloodlines" in screen matches a hackname. But that hack I found on romhacking.net doesn't have same graphics and is from 2008. So someone or the author itself grabbed the old hack and updated it. I then searched the web with Google and gave up. Btw, maybe not worth to search for it, because the article says Mesen emulator is needed.

@thelostsoul Thanks for checking. I also fixed the broken english from typing on my phone with the swipe keyboard. Shame on me.
It seems the source is this one:
http://www.romhacking.net/news/2021/
But indeed it seems to be a very Mesen-specific improvement. Sorry for that.
EDIT: It seems there's a Mesen RetroArch core.

Thanks for finding it, I couldn't. And no need to sorry on your side, i was criticizing the article.
On my side, I am not really interested in trying it out, as it uses a different emulator than my favorite. -
Has anyone played a Street Fighter II - Champion Edition hack (assuming that this version is a hacked one) in which whenever you attempt a special move like hadouken with Ryu / Ken or sonic boom with Guile, the screen filled with that movement? I remember playing with Ryu and once I do the shoryuken, it also fires like four or five hadoukens, crazy sh1t. And Blanka finished his ball attack with electricity. Was the Champion Edition since the sky in the Japan's scenario (Ryu) was dark at night. Did you ever play this version? Does someone know where can I get that? Thanks!
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
