My oldest son like to brag about his FPS gaming expertise. So me being the kind father I am introduced him to the classics Wolfenstein 3D and the original Doom. It was rather amusing watching him get his posterior handed to him on the hardest difficulty settings.

Once I get a retro pi bought( when I find the best place/model) and set up I plan to introduce him to some of the easier games of yesteryear, such as Battletoads, Blaster Master, the first TMNT, and ghost n goblins. Just so he understands how easy we had it back in the day

Anyone have any other difficult games from the NES and Genesis era to have him try?

@ruthless4u Lion King for Genesis. Don't let the name fool you, that game is brutally hard.

'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' for the NES. A game so difficult, most don't make it more than a few steps into stage one.

          @ruthless4u Here's a few I'd suggest:

          • Pretty much any Megaman game: I'd especially recommend the third game because even when you know a robot master's weakness, it still takes quite a bit of skill to take them down.

          • Recca: If you really want to give your son some trouble, just turn on this game and challenge him to beat it.

@ruthless4u Good stuff. Kids these days think they know it all. Back in our day it may not have looked as good, but gameplay was king. Have fun!

Summer Carnival '92: Recca for the NES is considered one of the hardest Shoot'em Ups, as I learned today (thanks to @SuperCatFooz for mentioning it in What is your favorite Shoot-em-up?).

Take classics like Street of rage, super mario, golden axe, megaman, metroid series...
I don't think someone that has always known autoheal and infinite continues will do so well, at least the first few tries :)

I recently discovered the most brutally hard game I could ever imagine. Nothing comes close.

Behold, almost 9 minutes of Hell (I'm pretty sure this was recorded with some kind of cheat):

I think my wife would have me arrested for inflicting that on him.

If I can remember where my old PS 1 is I might have him try Heart of Darkness.

@ruthless4u I got one from the SNES, Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos.

First, patch the rom with this: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3875/
                                  (game is unwinnable without it)

Second, I'll say that the game has good music, voices and graphics. But my praise ends there. The best way to describe this game is if someone wanted to rip off Sonic but failed poorly. Like, you go fast as all f**k and thats it. The levels and enemies were not designed for high speed platforming. You will find yourself running into enemies and off cliffs.

That being said, tell your kid, good luck.

Dreaming reminds me of Weird Dreams. I played it on the Commodore Amiga back then. Although "only" some kind of adventure game, I remember dying repeatedly. This game about a nightmare one has to escape from was a literal nightmare for me, I even remember dreaming about it one or two times.

So, apart from its high difficulty I remember, its creepy setting and atmosphere would be "perfect" to give a mouthy child something to fear … 😈

Ren & Stimpy Veediots and Ren & Stimpy Time Warp were probably the hardest games I had on my SNES. I vaguely recall Stimpy's Inventory being equally as hard.
