      Hi There,

Ive recently reinstalled a fresh copy of retropie from the image available on retropie site. ive been making regular backups and testing them, rolling back when something goes wrong.

ive been following a guide to set up retropie this time. from fresh install, xbox 360 controllers work great. i get to this step in the guide, and perform the updates per these instructions:

***Updating the RetroPie OS and packages can provide a 50%+ performance improvement in some cases. Absolutely do this step.

      Open RetroPie
RetroPie Setup > Update RetroPie-Setup Script > Yes
Update all installed packages > Yes > Would you like to update the underlying OS packages? > Yes
Wait 25 minutes (I timed it)That was easy enough...***

EDIT: all controllers break, not just the 360 controllers

      So my questions are:

is there a way to fix the controllers once the update is completed?

if not, is it ok to not do the update, does it really increase performance? Im aiming to get n64 working, doesnt have to be perfect, but would the updates help that? also have NES, SNES, Megadrive, Mastersystem, Neogeo and PSX systems on my retropie.

      thank you very much. chris.

@avengerfishing Go into the drivers' section of the packages and re-install the xpad driver, reboot and see if the controller works again.

@mitu doesnt work. in addition ive just discovered that all controllers break. i can configure another non 360 controller and it works in the front end but not in retropie settings, keyboard has to be used there.

@avengerfishing That's maybe because the controller is seen as 2nd player always. Do you have a keyboard attached to the Pi at all times ?

@mitu ah, i see about the 2nd controller/2nd player thing

keyboard is plugged in currenly so i can exit and restart as the main controller is broken

This is a first cause i just updated everything on my Pi about two hour ago and tested out my PS3, Xbox 360, SN30 Pro and Generic arcade stick and i never encountered this problem and i tested out each one one by one so i think the issue you're having is with your keyboard still plugged in which you should really test this out without your keyboard plugged in.

@ecks wish it was that simple. Keyboard wasn’t plugged in until the problem existed

all roads lead to: don't update at this stage

any further conflicting info on how to fix once updated?

Well if you ever want to use a better controller in my opinion you should get the SN30 Pro cause with that one i have no issues with it and it also feels a lot better for fighting games.

There are also reports of users fixing it by a reinstall of the xpad driver, that's why I recommended it. Sadly I don't have such controller to validate or find a solution.
I'd say you give it one more try by re-installing the driver, removing all controller configurations and then try re-configuring your controller again.

@mitu how to remove controller configs without a working controller and not plugging in a keyboard?

@avengerfishing Use the RetroPie-Setup script and reset your controllers - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/EmulationStation/#controller-configs. Restart and then try to map your gamepad in Emulationstation.
