4.3 to 4.4

Hello,

I use Retropie 4.3 on my TV and bartop and I spent many months to get it just right, especially all the videos previews and instant Amiga loading from ES. Anyway I see 4.4 is out as I haven't needed to check for months and normally the best way to upgrade is to backup the SD card or use a spare and start again which fills be with dread due to the amount of time I spent on the last image. So are the any clear instructions to how to migrate all my work from 4.3 to 4.4?

You can save your ROMs and configs and copy them over to the new system. Check this topic for ideas of what to backup and restore. Maybe it's time you get a new SD card and experiment with it.
Regardless of transferring the configuration to the new system, you might possibly have to re-configure the RetroArch key mappings - due to the new input binding method introduced in 1.7.1 (which you might already have installed ?).

Hi,

having spent many hours configuring my retropie I'm now afraid to do something wrong when migrating form 4.3 to 4.4.

I have configured my setup to use a 1TB USB drive mapped on /home/pi/RetroPie as instructed by the docs.

What would be the correct files/directories to be copied on a fresh 4.4 SD card from my current SD in order to replicate my setup ?

Yes, and if I understand correctly I should copy form my 4.3 SD Card to the new 4.4 SD Card the following dirs:

/etc/emulationstation
/opt/retropie/configs

as the following ones, will remanin utouched in my USB Drive:

/home/pi/RetroPie/roms
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS

Is the above correct ?

@weirdocollector If you followed the docs, then your bios folder will not be on the USB drive, only your ROMs, so you need to save it also.
/etc/emulationstation doesn't need to be copied, unless you modified the es_systems.cfg manually in that location.

That should be it. Make a backup of the sd-card also (https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#making-a-backup-option-1) just in case.

I've finally found the time to try to update my Retropie to 4.4, but re-reading the docs, if I've understood correctly, also the BIOS folder should be on the USB HDD, and as such should not be copied on the new 4.4 SD Card.

From the docs: Now that the USB drive is mounted directly to home/pi/RetroPie, every time this directory is accessed, you're actually accessing the USB drive.

As the BIOS directory is under home/pi/Retropie it seems it shouldn't be copied as it is already safely on the USB HDD.

If this is true, the only directories to be copied are:

/etc/emulationstation
/opt/retropie/configs

Once done that, the home/pi/Retropie directory have to be again mounted on the USB HDD using the procedure described in the docs.

Is the above correct ?
