Emulation Station lockup first install

@tformhals Do you have any other devices attached such as a usb hub? Have you overclocked the Pi Zero W? What type of SD card are you using ?

@tformhals the faster I go through the configuring keyboard screen the farther I get but it still locks up before I can finish.

I have tried a usb hub as well as a plain USB adapter. I have not overclocked the Pi Zero W. It is a 16GB card that came in the Canakit. If I push F4 I can exit to the terminal and it does not lock up.

I checked the temp from the terminal and it was only 41C. I launched emulation station after being in the terminal and it locked up after configuring the first two key mapping’s.
-
I have now tried two power supply’s and also powering from a pc still locking up.
-
Starting to get frustrated one of the Canakit power supplies won’t boot the zero at all. At least not the display. I get no HDMI signal. With another power supply I tried to do sudo apt-get upgrade and it got part of the way through and locked up and turned part of the txt at the bottom of the screen in gibberish and turned it pink.

Make sure you downloaded the RetroPie image for 0/1 not 2/3.
If that's correct, you could try re-downloading the image in case you had a bad download and/or try another sd-card.
-
@thedatacereal thanks I will have to get another micro sd card to try. I did try another download and flash with the same results. I may try to put Raspbian on and see how it behaves.
-
I tried a different card and tried installing Raspbian and it locked up at 50 percent. Starting to wonder if it’s the Pi itself.
-
@tformhals I've only had that issue with bad power supplies/bad hubs/connectors. I guess it's also a possibility it's a corrupted SD card or maybe a bad contact on the hardware. Only thing I can suggest is to eliminate each variable one by one til you get results. Eg. Not plug anything in and just see if it boots first then go from there.
-
So I have been trying for a few days to get this going. I don’t think it is hardware related at this point because I have tried full Raspbian and Kali on the zero without any problems. Other than it is slow.
I installed Retro pie over Raspbian lite and it worked ok. At that point I thought it still may have been a hardware issue so I reflashed the Retropie image and still get the lockup. If I exit to CLI within the first few seconds of emulation station starting I can do anything I want in the command line. I am going to see if I can SSH into the Pi when it locks up.
-
If I do sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get upgrade it also locks up doing the upgrade. But I was able to both of these in Raspbian and Raspbian lite.
