Each time a company launches one of these I expect them to follow it up with more efforts to close down rom sites. It makes sense for them to do so.

Oh, crap! I grew up on the PlayStation 1 alongside the NES and the Wii, so I'm hyped!

        Don't sweat it.
When in doubt, take a BYTE out of life.

Now all we need is a new Wild Arms or a remake (pretty please?)

Have you ever played Wild Arms Alter Code F on ps2? Itโ€™s a full remake of the first one and not too bad.

I kind of understand but I still get a little bit excited when these are announced - if only because they look cute. Having said that I'm less excited for the mini version of the PS1 as I don't think many of the games have aged well (doubly so for when the inevitable N64 mini is announced) and there was already a mini version of the playstation called the PS One which was equally cute. I don't think these classic consoles are really aimed at us though.

And why are none of these companies adding an SD slot and selling additional game packs. It would extend the life of the console and provide extra revenue for the company. Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

@ruckage people think that this is just a repurposed PSTV, and I wouldn't put it past Sony.

I feel like not having expandable storage works in their favor. Because instead of putting out a new game pack, they can just put out a whole new "classic" system.

Though give it sometime and this thing will be hacked. The dev behind the SNES Mini hack has plans to hack this as well. So once fans have expandable storage mods, then I feel that this will be a nice thing to pick up off the clearance shelf.

Absolutely, I'm certain it will be hacked. And I agree there business model is probably just to sell new units with different games.

I still think it would have been far more interesting to actually have games for sale and on the cartridge based systems they could have even had miniature versions of the carts, people would have loved that.
Nintendo could have done a whole amiibo tie in with a character model from a game packaged with a working cart for the nes/snes classic. Collectors would have lapped that up.

Selling actual mini carts for these systems kinda goes against the market they are targeting. They go after the people who don't want all that trouble, they just want a plug and play system that is ready to go. If people wanted carts, then they can just go get a pre-owned system or use their original.

If the games were for sale individually, here is how it would most likely work:

                            1. Company announces plans to sell little carts to play more games.

                            2. The games come out in a drip feed, around once a month, and it's never the games people want. It will end up being the games people have bought 45 times (Mario 1, Zelda 1, DK, etc.)

                            3. Rinse wash and repeat with a whole new "classics" system.

While I imagine Nintendo definitely would go with the 1 game per cart I was thinking more of each cart being a compilation of games. The system itself could still come with built in games. Most people wouldn't buy an older system as getting the games can be difficult and often expensive these days and the picture often isn't great on an HD TV.

The cart idea is more suited as something for collectors for which I think there would definitely be a market. Not going to happen though, just something I personally like the idea of.

Yes, but the old consoles are not great on actual TVs with HDMI. Now, imagine the Classic Mini could play those original cartridges on modern TV.

I also think they could come with a new console next year: A tinier version of the Playstation One. That way they can now concentrate on the early PS1 games that don't use analog control / rumble and next year provide a mini console with games that do use it.

I had pre ordered the PS classic, but cancelled it already. I just can't justify the 100 euros. My Pi 3 does literally everything better, so all I'd buy it for would be the cute little PS1 box. (And 1 other reason: I've read here about several people getting stuck on Final Fantasy VII on Retropie when going from the 2nd to 3rd disc..I'm scared to start on my Pi and eventually risk getting stuck 50-60 hours into the game. :') )

Would be cool though if they advertised the mini with a commercial like this again:

Pi 3B , 64 GB Sandisk ultra flashdrive, 19 systems, 872 hand picked classic gaming gems :-) Dual shock 4v2

                                        https://www.polygon.com/2018/10/29/18037502/playstation-classic-game-list-final-metal-gear-grand-theft-auto-final-fantasy

                                        Full list revealed.

Imo of this list only Final Fantasy VII, Wild arms, Metal Gear Solid, Oddworld: Abeโ€™s Oddysee and Resident Evil Directorโ€™s Cut are worthy of a spot on the Mini (when limiting yourself to just 20 games). I would replace all other games with something else. I'm glad I use a Pi so I won't have to deal with a console that won't let you play all the great games from your youth.

I saw a video on Youtube of two guys making a system to decide which games belong on the mini: Games could score points on number of sales, aggregated review score, user review score. Their list looks nothing like this. I don't know how they came up with these 20 games. Of course thet excluded all games with licensing issues, so they could only pick the ones already available on PSN. And then it feels like they just grabbed some games on there, without giving it much thought.

Pi 3B , 64 GB Sandisk ultra flashdrive, 19 systems, 872 hand picked classic gaming gems :-) Dual shock 4v2

@BobHarris There are off course some titles we probably wouldn't play much and enjoy, but they are big part of the lineup and image of the first Playstation. In example Toshinden isn't a good game and it didn't aged well too on top of that. But I would prefer these games to be included. The problem here is, the limit of 20 titles. In fact, the list is pretty good in my opinion. There is almost everything, Destruction Derby, Final Fantasy 7, Rayman, GTA, Resident Evil and such classics. I think this list is better than the SNES Mini has.

But, still no Chrono Trigger. I don't understand.

@thelostsoul I only bought games in the 90s that scored an 8 or higher in the Official UK Playstation magazine. I remember many games on this list scoring lower than that. Games like Tomb raider 2, Destruction derby 2, Crash bandicoot 3, Wipeout 2097, Alundra, Abe's exoddus, Street fighter alpha 2 or 3, Bushido blade, Doom, Castlevania SOTN, Silent hill, Resident evil 2, Final fantasy VIII and IX, and Tactics and many more should be on there. Those are all true classics that are still very playable today.

Of course it's all personal preference...probably somebody out there is very excited that Mr. Driller is on the list.

Big chance it gets hacked and then everyone can get their own nostalgic highs.
