Best Nes rom hacks?
-
@sterling94 Hello, you ask the right person. :D We already have some threads for it, here are the links. I also pick some NES romhacks out for you, which are installed and working on my system. Just a question, do you patch the roms yourself?
Some of my favorite NES Romhacks:
- Minus Infinity based on Mega Man 4
- Rogue Dawn based on Metroid 1
- Super Mario Bros. 3Mix based on Super Mario Bros. 3
- The Holy Relics based on Castlevania 1
- Outlands based on Zelda 1
Some of my favorite NES hidden gems:
- Crystalis
An action adventure game in similar style to Zelda with a bit of RPG elements - Journey To Silius
Action platformer comparable to something like Contra or Mega Man. Originally this game was created as a Terminator game, but they did not get the license. - Mr Gimmick
Highly polished platformer never came out in the US. - Nightshade
A dark, but somewhat humorous click and point adventure game. - Summer Carnival '92 - Recca
An unbelievable fast vertical shoot'em up pushing the NES to its limits without slowdowns.

Back to the Future Enhanced
I recently learned it's more than just enhanced colors, it also gives infinate time & lives as well as other gameplay enhancements to make it actually possible to beat!Deadpool
Look for the 2018 version - very heavily modded from Ninja GaidenSpy vs Spy - The Island Capers
A sequal to spy vs spy that was never realeased on NES
Spy vs Spy is a fun 2 player split screen game where you set booby traps and try to get the briefcase to the exit -
I started a thread on romhacks and homebrew that had alot of input:

I have really been enjoying Deadpool (A Ninja Gaiden hack)

@shizzmoney Problematic to me is, the info page is available only in Facebook. I don't use FB and avoid it where I can. I found a forum entry in the romhacking site with a download link for the patch, if someone is like me. Still beta, looks good. https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=26228.0
-
@thelostsoul Kudos for avoiding FB. I also block it completely on all of my systems, so I miss any FB-only information. It's a price I'm willing to pay.

hello there...
Can anyone tell me, How do we get to know about the binaries where updated or not???
Is there any specific way to do that? If yes then please share relevant information with me. -
@erica735 What about do you talk?? Which binaries? If your question is not related to NES romhacks, please create a new thread. Edit: Maybe this sounds harsh. I am just confused.
-
@erica735 I didn't understand you either. Please explain your question in other words.

On Romhacking.net, there's a release of a 2 player simultaneous patch for Super Mario Bros.
-
@spud11 Yeah, I saw it too (I check the site on regularly basis). It is this one Super Mario Bros. - Two Players Hack. This reminds me a similar hack with Super Mario World, which never got finished (sadly): 2 Player Co-op - The Return. The NES hack on the other hand seems to be finished and people on romhacking.net are freaking out!
Edit: The xdelta application says "xdelta: Super Mario Bros. (Two Players Hack).xdelta: bad magic number: not a valid delta". Anyone could get it to work?
-
@thelostsoul I dragged and dropped the patch file on DeltaPatcher.exe (v2.0.1) and then applied it to the
Super Mario Bros. (World).nes
file and it worked fine. I can confirm it works. The
Super Mario Bros. (World).nes
file is 40976 bytes in size and the SHA1 is EA343F4E445A9050D4B4FBAC2C77D0693B1D0922. -
@spud11 @thelostsoul Thanks for mentioning the SMB 2P hack. I'll put it on my to-do list for the winter. :)
-
@Clyde The Pile of Shame grows and grows, right? ;-) At least on my side.
-
@thelostsoul Same here, same here. ;) At least I integrated my new MSI Cubi 3 mini PC into my centralized backup system today, and generated shiny new ED25519 SSH keys in the process. I can sleep a bit more soundly now. :)

Aaaaand … done yesterday! \o/ (After having a bad cold for five days.) A very short test went well: I just started the game and jumped around with both players at the beginning of the first level.
I'll thoroughly test it with a friend this saturday – although she is a console player and has "some respect" for my upright cabinet, because she's not used to arcade controls. ;)
Take that, Pile of Shame! *defying laughter from the Pile*

@Clyde Me today. I finally got it patching right and rom is working. Now, I have to do the work and integrate it into my setup (includes custom video recording). That must be exciting playing this game together with a friend. I read in the comments there, it is harder, because you have to share resources and always wait for the other guy (which hinders on some points, especially at bowser stages). And even if one of you die, you have to restart both of you. This needs coordination and I bet it must be a lot of fun. Prepare.
-
@thelostsoul You could use this 0:48 video from one of the hackers himself:

The video shows an option called "respawn" to avoid that. I wonder if it's in our version of the hack … *runs to his cabinet*

@Clyde From the footage, it have different graphics and the hud is different. Could be something like a remake on a different platform. I also read about changes for "our" version and I would know if this feature was implemented. "Our" version is quite vanilla without changing anything else in the game. Sorry dissapointing you. This feature looks really cool. I also wish there would be an option for friendly fire (like in modern versions). But hey, its still great. :-)
From the title screen, you can search for "super mario bros co-op corpse grinder". EDIT: I take everything back. Our version is from corpse grinder too, i am confused now. ?!
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
