Donkey Kong Pauline Edition
-
@mitu That did the trick, cheers :)
(Huh, spoke too soon - it worked beautifully, then I tried putting the samples in the BIOS/fba/samples directory and now the game goes haywire even if I delete the samples again.)
-
Try looking under the bios folder that should have it i cant be 100% sure at the moment im not near my setup
-
@Superman550 Yeah, it turned out it wasn't the samples, it just seems to go totally screwy and crash if you load it more than once or twice. The crashes are usually all different. How weird.
-
@SpudsMcToole Interesting i will have to see for myself later on but it sounds like you might have used a bad rom set
-
@SpudsMcToole Might be :
- bad rom (post the logs)
- wrong emulator (i don't know the status of dkong emulation in lr-fbalpha2012, so make sure you are using lr-fbalpha)
- old version of lr-fbalpha (your issue reminds me of an old bug with hiscores i solved a long time ago)
It would be a good idea to tell me the full version of the emulator (it is shown at the bottom left of the retroarch menu).
Also, with dkong on lr-fbalpha use the samples i posted there : https://retropie.org.uk/forum/post/162762
@markwkidd btw, dkong colors in mame2003-plus got fixed ?
-
Seeing as how the Pauline Edition is just a basic graphics hack of 'Donkey Kong' and I don't believe that ROM has changed very often over time, the game should run in a number emulators. Myself, I have it running well in AdvanceMAME 3.9. It's definitely worth tagging in @GtBFilms for input, as this is a favorite of his.

It seems like there was a discussion about Donkey Kong colors which I was not much involved in personally, but I can't find it in the issues. Has there been some conversation about it or am I imagining this?
At any rate I don't see any obvious changes form MAME 0.78 for Donkey Kong other than improved sample support.
Is the fix you are talking about from MAME 0.116?
0.116: Couriersud implemented discrete sound from schematics in Donkey Kong. Color generation from schematics (resistor mixer). Replaced DAC/Samples sound with Discrete. Removed all samples. Changed VSync to 60.606061 Hz.

I opened this one 6 months ago https://github.com/libretro/mame2003-plus-libretro/issues/290 , it's pointing the related fix in fbalpha.
I think the related change in mame is actually this one :
0.141u2: Couriersud fixed a bug in palette_normalize_range which caused color distortion. The luminance normalization now converts r,g,b to y,u,v and normalizes y prior to converting back to r,g,b. This affects e.g. Radar Scope, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.
@mediamogul It was only fixed in 0.141u2, so afaik AdvanceMAME could be using the wrong colors too.
Real colors look like this :
Previously they were redder. -
@barbudreadmon Yeah, my FBA was overdue an update. Works every time now :)

I'm not near my setup at the moment, but going by memory, I believe the colors were indeed much more red. Very good to know. I'll compare and post back to confirm a bit later.

Thanks. I thought I searched the github repo for
dkong
?? Oh well, the link is much appreciated. I've reopened the issue. -
I made an overlay file if anyone wants it. (Credit to someone else for the actual bezel art, don't know who.)
Looks nice zoomed in to 1.43:

Grant is a speed demon and has already added the Pauline Edition to mame2003-plus based on this thread. 🤩
-
@markwkidd Ace :)
-
@mediamogul Sorry, I'm a bit late and it looks like this has been sorted, but I'm using a modified dkong.zip rom under lr-mame20003. I updated the metadata in RetroPie to rename it Donkey Kong (Pauline Edition) after scraping. For original (not Pauline) Donkey Kong I just resort to using the dkongo.zip rom. All my roms are from romset 0.78.
So my samples are just in the usual place:
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/samples/mame2003/dkong.zip
Both my modified dkong, zip and my dkongo.zip just use the same samples.
-
Great, now have to hope a binary mame2003-plus is going to be made available, at some point ;-)
I also want to eventually finish my old arcade overlay project I started a couple of years ago on the Retroarch forums. The last ones I worked on look like this.
One old knackered machine, and one normal machine. Made mostly for Mame PC, but work on a Pi.
