I am new to RetroPie. I built an arcade with 2 joysticks. I run the configuration for both and things seem fine, meaning UP is up and DOWN is down. I play a game or 2, go back to the main menu and UP is down and DOWN is up. Any ideas why this would be happening?

What emulator are you using when playing ? How did you configure your joysticks ?

Raspberry Pi 3b+. I used Controller Configuration in EmulationStation to config both joysticks. This happens randomly, I have gone into the SNES emulator or a MAME emulator and the joystick directions change.

Sometimes my X-Arcade Tankstick will freak out in the RetroPie menu, but never in games. By "freak out" I mean "receive inputs as if holding UP or DOWN" until I make some input. It's annoying, but not deal-breaking so I just live with it. :( I know that's not helping your situation; it's just letting you know that you're not making a simple mistake. (Or maybe we both are.) Or maybe the controller drivers are wonky.
