n64 controller config
-
I really want to play Zelda Ocarina of Time, but no matter how many times i try to config the controller it just doesn't work properly. Something to do with Mupen64plus or lr-mupen64plus. I have no idea what those are or how to fix. I'm not the most computer savvy either. I tried to do it with a Ps3 controller to no avail either. The buttons just don't set up like they need to for Zelda. I'd appreciate any help.

The biggest problem with the N64 controller setup is simply that the N64 controller was a weird setup in the first place. I ended up just getting a usb N64 controller. Now, I ran into some problems with configuring that controller and ended up learning a lot about manually configuring controllers.
Now that said, you need to be a little more specific in regards to what problems you're having. Whether the controller buttons aren't registering at all, or whether the button layout is just different than what you're trying to set up. Keep in mind the standard setup with the N64 on a ps3 or equivalent controller puts those weird little yellow directional buttons on the right side of the original controller are typically mapped to the up, down, left, right of your right analog stick.
Again though, more info is needed as to what problem you're experiencing.

I've figured out the problem but not how to solve it. There's two loaded emulators for the N64. the Mupen64plus-Libretro emulator and the Mupen64plus. the Libretro has an odd controller configuration and split screen doesn't work and the Mupen64plus has the classic configuration and works with split screen. Now just trying to figure out how to add games to the second emulator but not sure how.

Use the Runcommand launch menu to select which emulator to run for a game or for all N64 games.

@mitu oh, thanks! It seems i still have to configure controllers for both emulators in the system somehow but i think there's a tutorial. It's a few years old but it will probably work
-
@mitu so i figured out how to switch emulators but to no avail. The config is still stuck. If you look under control config here https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Nintendo-64 it shows the Mupen64plus-Libretro config and the Mupen64plus config. the mupen one has the weird right analog down and a buttons combined as well as the right analog left button and x combined as well as A is B and B is Y. Not sure how to get to the original setup.

@dennievortex y (west button) should be "b" and b (south button) should be "a". I'm not sure how this is weird. If you mapped your controller properly in emulation station the default config should work perfectly. The only weird thing is that the N64 "c" buttons are mapped to the right analog. But there is no way around this (there are no c buttons on modern controllers). The only difference between the two emulators is the standalone mupen64plus also double maps left "c" and down "c" to x and a, where as lr-mupen64plus doesn't map x and a at all.

@quicksilver @quicksilver all i know is my controller loads into the N64 with the top pic in this album https://imgur.com/qLg8vX8. When i configure it the normal way it automatically switches to the other way when i load the N64 no matter what emulator i use. It causes buttons to not work no matter how i configure.
-
@quicksilver so how do i get the A button to work in Zelda? as is it won't let me pull out my sword. it just pulls out whatever's in bottom C button. Nothing works as button A when i configure it like a regular N64 controller
-
Thanks everyone. i figured it out. Had to configure the buttons a little weird but now they work.
