@drake999 Why don't you think Saturn is possible? It runs fine on the Odroid Xu4. The only reason it didn't get a Pi port was because of the lack of GLS 3.0 support. Now this is here it should come.

@Barcrest Well if that is the case I'm even more excited then. I wasn't basing that opinion on anything other than my own knowledge of the system's complexity and how difficult emulation for the platform has been traditionally. If it works at playable speed on the Pi4 that is awesome.

@drake999 There is an emulator that runs it pretty well on the odriod. I think it is a fork of YABSE, it may even be linked earlier up in this thred. You can get it for the PC too.

On my overclocked 3 b+ I was able to get Road Rash running at 35-55fps. Menus were fullspeed and load times were fine. I suspect the pi 4 will be able to handle no problem. Pure speculation at this point but if I could get that close on the 3 b+ then its not a huge leap to think the much more powerful pi 4 can handle.

@quicksilver Thanks for the info. I've been away from the forum for a while and the last time I was in a discussion involving 3DO testing it was a slideshow in terms of fps. I never bothered to test it myself when I heard the results others were getting. With what you've told me its all but guaranteed to work great on the Pi4, which is awesome news.

@Barcrest About my only positive experience with Saturn emulation was a brief test I did on my core i5 gaming laptop and from what I remember it worked quite well. I think it was Mednafen. I never went beyond just testing and playing around with the emulator briefly though as I didn't find the interface very intuitive at the time, and it was a bit of a chore to use I found personally. I've heard Yabause is quirky at best so never even attempted that one. Because it was my understanding that up until recently Saturn emulation was difficult even on a beefed up PC, I never bothered to even entertain the idea on an ARM based platform. I guess I should have been paying more attention.

I dont know if anyone noticed but the pi 4 SDRAM frequency is set to 3200mhz. I knew that it was better than previous models, just didnt realize how much better. I also saw on the RPI config.txt documentation page that by enabling 4k video mode, the GPU's clock speed will auto increase to 600 mhz, so there is definitely some overclocking potential here if 600mhz is considered stable as a factory setting.
Im picking up my 4b 2gb tomorrow and hope to start playing with it this weekend. Fun times!
Where'd you end up getting it from? Still MicroCenter?

My local microcenter has all pi4 models in stock. The 4gb is listed as out of stock on the website but when I got there they had just got a shipment this morning.

About Saturn emulation, if it works fine on Odroid XU4, it has the potential to be equal or better on the RPi 4. The major weakness on the older Pies was the lack of OpenGL ES 3.X support, but the RPi 4 supports it and the GPU, despite there is little information and tests about it now, it is most likely more powerfull that the Odroid XU4.
About the CPU performance, multi-threaded the XU4 wins, it is 8 core SBC, but the RPi 4 cores are more recent and more powerfull, even running at lower frequency. And since most emulators are single-thread, or at least, don't use more than 2 cores, the RPi should have better performance in the future.
But this isn't something that will happen next week or next month, it will require time and alot of work, probably even on some of the emulators code. -
I'm wondering whether the major changes to the hardware of the pi4 might wind up meaning that
beebem(BBC Micro) has a greater chance of working properly (ie with sound). -

@ByteThis I think somebody already tried installing RetroPie on the PI4 - it's in another topic - but it's more than just making sure everything compiles and installs right. The other poster just got a black screen opening up ES, so there's more work to be done to make it work with the new hardware and software.

@ByteThis I did a fresh install of buster and retropie on top of that on a Pi 3b+ - had loads of issues and glitches. And no this didn't work when transferred and run on a Pi4 - errors about the GL mode / experimental driver. even when switching the Pi 4 to legacy mode only got a black screen. Wait for the devs I guess :)

My 4GB Pi 4 just arrived today. Could anyone please summarize what is postponing the RetroPie on Pi 4 now?
Ive heard there are missing some CPU and graphics drivers in Buster. Ist that right? I did not find any informations about that on Rasperry Pi website and blog posts. Also what is in the way of RetroPie, ES, RetroArch etc etc to run on the Pi 4? And of course the big question what postpones the use of N64? And finally where to stay updated abput this topics?

I have a day one unit, it came in a sealed box but without a bag if I remember correctly!

any case/large heat sinks ? i cant seem to find in ebay
and the original case is ugly
