Run shutdown script via Amazon Alexa?
-
Hey everyone
Currently moving all my AV equipment into a hidden unit in the kitchen. Receiver, PS4 etc - to support my surround sound setup.
The only kicker and only device I can’t control with Alexa is of course my 3B+ running RetroPie.
It’s been suggested I can simply plug this into a smart plug, and this will give the desired effect “Alexa, turn on/off RetroPie” but - turning it off will simply cut the power and this means no safe shutdown script will run, obviously.
Is there a way I can use Alexa to control the Pi, so essentially when I say “Alexa, turn off the RetroPie”, it’ll simply just execute the script?

@Dinsdale aren’t you still using some sort of controller when actually using the pi? If so then wouldn’t you just go to the shutdown menu, safe shut down, then tell Alexa to turn the plug off? Then you tell it to turn the plug on and it will start up again.

@BJRetro There’s a shutdown menu? I had no idea. I’ll take a look at that later. That might do it. Thank you.

@Dinsdale you are running retropie with emulation station right? How have you been shutting down before this? While in emulation station before you select a game, you just press the key that you have configured as your start key and one of the options is to quit and then select that and shut down. That is then a safe shut down. Then you power off.

Thanks - never thought of that! Prior I was just flicking the button on my RetroFlag case which initiated the safe shutdown script.

@Dinsdale ah got it! Well glad it works now sounds like a really neat set up. On the other hand I would have never thought to use an Alexa powered outlet so I guess teamwork!
