Very new to all this retropie and raspberry stuff. Installed retropie on to a rasp3. Loads fine. I go to usb roms over and they dont pop up on retropie. I re formatted usb drive many times and tried from scratch over and over. I can get retropie to update the emulator list but when I add rom and plug back into pie it doesnt load. Is there something I'm missing? Is it because I have only found. Exe roms?

Unless you are loading PC DOS games, your roms should NOT be .exe format. It is likely you are downloading viruses/spyware and not proper roms. I would suggest finding a new place to download your roms. For proper rom file extensions consult the official documentation in the "emulators" section as they will vary based on the system: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

On some sites it may look like you are downloading rom, but actually it's some kind of download maganer, hence .exe extension. I never used it, because of risk of viruses/spyware mentioned above. Sometimes there's a smaller button like "more options", which allows you to download the actual rom.

@Niejeden is there a site that would have the roms listed with extension? Sorry for my ignorance, very new to this. I used one of the recommended sites from the retropie site and that's what I got. I will try the more options as well.

@bezeau30 there's no ROM sites here in the forum - please read and understand the forum rules - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2/forum-rules.

I think he's trying to figure out if you really visited the RetroPie site. RetroPie doesn't link to or support ROM sites. If you really got your suggestion where you claimed, then you were clearly not on the RetroPie website.

@bezeau30 I think he was trying to understand where you thought the official documentation pointed to romsites. Not the romsites themselves. None of the official documentation should point to any romsites.

@bezeau30 I see, the site you linked is not the 'RetroPie site', just another RPI related site. I've removed it, per the site rules.
