That's true, but since there was some motivation to rewrite the ngcd driver upstream, i made sure to report all bugs and feature requests. As i said, the loading speedhacks are already in fbalpha, loading speed might be x15 or something.
Upstream have no plans to add chd support so a libretro bounty was opened about it.

Just to update that CHD has been recently added to the emulator. Given the benefits over FBNeo and that it has been added to Libretro, would it be possible to add this emulator to Retropie?

Better late than never but I've made a PR for this. I actually looked into porting a standalone neogeo cd emulator a few years ago but never completed it. I'm a fan of the game Last Hope so I finally got around to implementing a basic script module for this earlier. Only tested with that one game.

We don't currently have a neogeocd system, but I'm not completely against adding one in the future (I'd still keep support for running via neogeo ROM folder) but we would need default theme graphics. That probably will need to wait till after the next official retropie release anyway.
