On a pi4 with an updated weekly build. I'm not even sure if the kernel headers are installed. I installed the kernel with sudo BRANCH=next rpi-update

      I ran rpi-source and then from /home/pi/linux-e880285e25a6a761be32339736fbe584d0d67486/, I ran sudo make headers_install INSTALL_HDR_PATH=/usr to install them .

      Compiling the driver fails.

It has nothing to do with the modules, there's something related to the kernel files copied by rpi-update which breaks the compilation - see https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/issues/1364.
