      After finding out how to automatically boot instead of having to type PI and RASPBERRY in to the prompt I thought I was going to have an easy day.

      Ive just had to pull the plug after a non responsive joypad and keyboard in the ZX Spectrum emulator and everytime I switch my Pi on it goes to the text based prompt showing this:

      terminate called after throwing an instance of 'char const*'

        Sound like something got corrupted (a gamelist/a program). Re-install EmulationStation from the RetroPie-Setup menu and see if you get the same error. To start the RetroPie-Setup, type (at the command prompt)

        cd RetroPie-Setup
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh

        then go to Manage Packages -> Manage core packages and then choose emulationstation. Update the package, then exit the setup and reboot with sudo reboot.

              Re install from binary didnt work so installing from source now. Seems to be doing more as more text flashing up on screen.

                No. Neither of these have cured it. Its still doing it. Do I need to wipe and restart? I hope not....

                  It could be one of your configuration files. Try renaming the config file in \\retropie\configs\all\emulationstation, the es_settings.cfg.
                  Can you also post the contents of the log file es_log.txt, that's in the same folder mentioned above ?

                      On second though, why don't you post its contents, instead of renaming it ? That and the es_log.txt file's contents.

                            The config file seems ok and there's no obvious error in the log. Try removing the gamelist.xml files that you find under the \\retropie\configs\all\gamelists\ folders and restart again.

                              Erm...I dont have a gamelists folder. Is that the cause? I do have a retropie\configs\all\emulationstation\gamelists\ folder though. If it is the one, every folder within there has a gamelist.xml file in. Is it the one in 'zxspectrum' im deleting? As that was the system I was using when it all went wrong?

                                Yes, that was a typo. Try deleting/renaming them one by one (starting with zxspectrum if you'd like) and see if that gets EmulationStation working again.

                                  @mitu I deleted them all. Thank you so much it finally worked. Too scared now to try and play speccy games incase it happens again!
