I can see this keeps coming up, but I can't find a consistent reply (maybe there isn't one).
Got a USB N64 controller, and struggling to fully map the buttons. Worked out that B=A, and a couple of other things, but tried playing Zelda and Banjo Kazooie, and the top and bottom "c" buttons don't work, so the games are unplayable beyond a certain point.

Is there a true mapping config out there?

    Raspberry pi 4, Retropie 4.6

What emulator are you using ? The details of the configuration for each emulator are in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-64/.

Honestly? Whatever launches automatically with Retropie 4.6. Don't know how to change it.

Had to add a 200millisec audio lag to get it to work, but now running pretty well.

Things like F-Zero X are running fine, Star Fox 64 is OK but can't do a back flip (c down).

it's announced when you launch a game: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/

            OK it says ir-mupen64plus-next

But looking at the link posted above, the setup stated for that emulator doesn't work. I found something on a forum that's close (so B mapped to A, and a couple of other changes), but it's still not right - it's pretty much the mapping posted for mupen64plus, but the up & down C buttons don't work at all with this configuration.

This probably isn't the most efficient way, but I just edited /opt/retropie/configs/n64/InputAutoCfg.ini to manually change how my controls work.

@dankcushions So would you advise changing the emulator?
Having said that, I've pressed buttons when the image appears, and it just carries on and loads the game!
