3DO: The Pi4 Emulation Nobody Loves?

Has anyone got any tips for getting the best performance out of Need for Speed on 3DO? It seems to run pretty well on my Pi4 with overclocking (of the Pi hardware rather than the 3DO in emulation), but the sound is very patchy and it feels like it’s running a bit too slowly (even taking into account the slower speed of the game on 3DO).

Incidentally, does 3DO emulation benefit best from GPU or CPU overclocking? What are the bottlenecks for Lr-Opera on a Pi4?

Opera is mostly a low level emulator. That includes the graphics. Meaning that it's CPU heavy. Overclocking the GPU would make likely zero difference in performance.

Just don't globally turn on the shared nvram or your going to run out of save game space pretty fast even if you used the game guru to compress the games your not currently playings save game file your going to burn through the 3do's memory fast.games like theme park alone will use most of it.
Unless the developers add in an option to enable the FZ-EM256 256 KB Expandable Memory Unit and I have no idea how that could be done

There isn't any real info on the expansion memory unit but I'd like to try to implement it. That said it really wouldn't help that much as you have to explicitly move data to and from it AFAIK. (I have one but haven't played with it yet.)
The NVRAM is actually formatted with the operafs and I've been meaning to test if simply expanding the virtual storage would work. It's on my roadmap.

Has anybody experienced graphical glitches on Myst and Star Control 2?
Every time I get to a place where there should be a fade between two screens (ie. when I get nearer to a planet in Star Control 2), the fade screws up and I get an abrupt cut and a visual glitch.
I'll try and get some pictures up tomorrow.

its really leg's/glitch om my side...I'm pretty far into Killing Time now, but it doesn't run amazingly well. It's playable but very very on the edge, I really liked the premise of it and have carried on playing it for a lot longer than I would have in most other situations.
There is some discussion about which settings to use earlier on in this thread, but there was no conclusive answer. Threaded DSP might make some difference, but it also makes the opening video crash (but you can either turn the setting off and then back on to get round that, or just use a save state.

Escape From Monster Manor runs full speed on my rig, but the sound is so bad it's not worth playing.
Killing Time is choppy from the get-go, and as a matter of fact I'm fairly certain it ran better when my pi was not overclocked. I may have to test it further.
On the other hand, and I was quite surprised, Wolfenstein 3D runs beautifully, and actually I think it may be my favourite game on the system so far ^^Also, save states don't seem to work on my end. I can save, but whenever I load my states I get a black screen, and I can't do anything except quit the emulator.
As for Star Control and Myst, I want to emphasize that they run full speed on my end, it's just that graphical glitch that winds me up.

Weird, I haven't had that problem on 3DO.

Edit : Tried it and it is very choppy, although the framerate gets significantly better inside the labyrinth. At times, the gameplay actually feels the way it should, but the sound is atrocious throughout. So I think we're having pretty much the same experience with this one.

It's glorious, it looks, sounds and handles great.
Having said that I've never played the PC version much, so I'm not sure how it compares, but the 3DO port is certainly worth a spin.I haven't noticed this, but haven't played them extensively at all.
You really don't need to, the glitch shows up ten seconds into both games. Just try switching screens on Myst or approaching a planet in Star Control.

Fair enough on Killing Time, I think it is just the way it is right now. Maybe I'll try it without overclock just in case though.
I've played Wolfenstein 3D loads on PC, over however long it's been out for (more than 25 years I'd think), so I'll have a look and compare. Why don't you install the PC port?
Then Myst is fine on mine, I had a click around in that previously. Not sure about Star Control.

As for Wolfenstein 3D, after a bit of research it seems to be an improved rendition of the same port that was released on Mac/Jaguar/SNES/Apple IIGS, and it seems to have altered layouts of all the levels. I tried installing the PC port on the RPi 3 earlier this year, with very little success, although truth be told until yesterday I did not think I liked this game so I did not try overly hard. I may try and get it to work in dosbox although the prospect of playing a FPS with a keyboard and mouse is horrid to me ^^ (please don't judge me ^^)

It locked up on me after several minutes ... but didn't have time to tinker with pcsx-rearmed settings at the time i tried it to see if it was an emulator setting.

Wolf 3D port must be pretty easy to set up now as I've done it! Works with pad also. I will judge on the keyboard and mouse control point, but each to their own! :p

@AdamBeGood Thanks, I'm mostly interested in the settings in your retroarch quick menu, as I'm thinking (hoping) that the glitch comes from there.

Now that sounds good, I've never managed to wrap my head around a keyboard and mouse setup ^^
EDIT : Never mind, I think I found the issue. The timing hack for Alone in the Dark was left on, and it was causing the graphical issues I was experiencing. Star Control 2 is glorious now!
