Soul Calibre

@George-Spiggott I know the Dreamcast port of the game is superior, but I'd be curious to try the arcade original. How playable is it at 30 FPS?
-
Borderline. It's almost there, sound is a bit patchy but the graphics are ok. It reminds me of the Amiga 500 version of Streetfighter II for speed.
I was also curious as well, it's not a patch on the Dreamcast version which runs upscaled to 1080p with frameskip set to 1.
I'll give Soul Edge and Tekken 3 a test later tonight both of those were borderline on Mame2010 so I'm expecting similar results.
-
@George-Spiggott Now Soul Edge and Tekken 3 might be more interesting in that there isn't a much superior version already running well haha
I'd be very interested in knowing the results, please let us know.

Tekken 3 should run ok on a PS1 emulator I would think?
I remember having a good time playing that on the console. -
@RedMarsBlueMoon It does, we're talking about running the arcade versions on the pi 4.
-
@Zering Tekken 3 worked ok with much the same issues as Soul Calibur. My copy of Soul Edge won't work properly, the controls do not respond. I'll check this isn't a mismatched ROMSET issue and report back.
Does anyone know if MAME2016 is an ongoing project?
-
@George-Spiggott Thanks for the update, it's good to know.
Does anybody know why games like Soul Edge and Tekken 3 won't run full speed on a Pi 4? Is it because MAME is designed to cover a range of arcade machines rather than a dedicated emulator?

That's a nice way to put it, but yeah that's the gist of it : mame emulates thousands of different arcade machines, so it's mostly written for cross-platform compatibility and has very little support for dynarecs (which are specific for 1 arch and generally the best way to workaround slow devices).
-
Mame2016 seems to not like several of my 2016 romset roms, even those that work fine on Mame2010. I also have 2016 roms for Soul Calibur 2 and Soul Calibur 3 but neither of them work at all. There is also an arcade rom for Tekken Tag Tournament that I need to find and try out.
So far apart from running Soul Calibur without graphical errors I haven't got much out of Mame2016.
-
@George-Spiggott That's a bit of a shame. I was hoping that the Pi 4 would open up tons of games to run with MAME.
Sounds like I'll stick with my old rom pack then. -

That's cool, I didn't realise redream had a frameskip option, does it help with a lot of games as I usually play redream at 720p, if I go higher than that I get a few slowdowns.
-
@Zering There were a few games that needed a pi4 and Mame2010. Rad Mobile for example.
@retropieuser555 I'm using Flycast with the KMS driver.
-
I can confirm that Tekken Tag Tournament works at around 35 FPS.
This is a fairly big deal as the PS2 version of TTT is difficult to emulate on the current emulators so it will be a very long time before we see the PS2 version on the Pi.
To recap this is my full list of tested roms that won't run on FBN or Mame2003, the Mame version required and speed. Note that this list is in no way close to definitive.
Power Drift (2010 full speed)
Rad Mobile (2010 full speed)
Soul Edge V2 (2010 almost full speed, use frameskip)
Soul Calibur (2016 slow) (use Dreamcast version)
Soul Calibur 2 (none)
Soul Calibur 3 (none)
Tekken 3 (2010 slow, use frameskip)
Tekken Tag (2016 slow)
Tekken 4 (none)
Tekken 5 (none) -
@George-Spiggott as a side note Tekken 6 runs full speed on ppsspp.
-
@George-Spiggott even if they actually launched on MAME, it's pretty obvious that games running on ps2 hardware and above wouldn't run well on pi4 anyway.
-
@barbudreadmon Yes but I wanted to see if they run at all. I didn't even realise Tekken Tag ran until I looked into this. I only ever had the PS2 version.

As far as arcade is concerned, tekken tag is actually running on PS1-based arcade hardware, which runs well on mame (it requires a decent device though).

I think that the Pi can probably handle it, it's just a matter of finding the right combination of features in an existing emulator. I'm currently installing Mame 2015 to see what results I can get.
Hopefully I can get all of the last few arcade games I have that won't run in FBNeo to run in a single emulator.

I wouldn't count too much on MAME for those, iirc namco system 12 (that PS1 arcade hardware) with MAME ran around half speed on my 2.56Ghz NUC.
-
@barbudreadmon The System 11 is the PS1 arcade hardware, not 12, if I recall correctly.
