X68000 emu doesn't support save states?
-
I've had the X68k emulator working for several months, but I am unable to save. When I try to do so, it says, "Core does not support save states." Is this something I can change on my own end? Playing Castlevania is pointless without save states.

@stevethefish76 Nope, there's nothing you can do about it.
Castlevania has a save function though.
If you really want save states you could play the PSX port. -

Save states != Game Save. You save like you would have on the original system - on the floppy disk. I think in Akomajou Dracula you can save after every boss fight (if you win).

I know that save states does not equal game saves. But for example on my Megadrive Mini or Playstation Mini, I can save games using the emulated game save feature. But I must create a save state to go back to, otherwise the ROM will forget what I've done. Are you saying that is not the case with this emulator?

That doesn't look like a 'game save' to me. If the game supports saves, then loading the save should put you back where you saved - just like on a PC. Probably the emulator on those systems doesn't support game saves.

@mitu Well, it's because they are ROMs, after all. Read Only Memory. I'm not the biggest user of emulators, but these mini consoles load up a ROM image and while you can save games to them, once you exit the game you lose it unless you created a save state. I'll give it a shot and see if I can save to Castlevania or any random RPG or whatnot.
By the way, since Retropie works on a Debian core, are these emulators also available to use on a regular Linux desktop? I migrated to Linux Mint in February.

Indeed, but the cartridges they came in sometimes had a battery backed writable memory (battery RAM), the Famicom Disk system used floppies for saving games, Playstastion had memory cards, etc. These are often emulated and you can save your game, just like on a real system.

Yes, apart from the emulators being available for Linux, RetroPie can also be installed on Debian & friends, see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/.

@mitu Thanks for your help. It took me a while to confirm things to get back to you. I was wrong about the save states on the Megadrive Mini. The game saves are there. I thought I had to use the save states lest I lose the data.
I have successfully installed Retropie onto my Linux Mint desktop. Thanks!
