Getting the best N64 experience on a Pi 4

@agtrigormortis Most of my GOG software runs on the Pi through appropriate source ports or DOSBox.
The only things I've struggled with are DOS CD games as the Gog version seems to lack the executable/CD image.Hi @Zering, I'm sure this isn't the case here, but I have found that GOG sometimes use a weird format for CD Images. It still works but it isn't .IMG or .iso, I forget what it was in the cases I saw.
-
@adambegood Yeah I've seen that too. I don't remember the exact format either but I seem to recall DOSBox refusing to mount it.
-
@zering Did you try a different modifier at that end of the mount? I know -cdrom and -iso are options aren't they? I am pretty sure I mounted them okay... But can't remember how or which game now.
-
@adambegood I did and got an illegal image type sort of error. I think it was on Alone in the dark.
-
@zering thank you very much
-
@agtrigormortis i have a cooler master pi case 40
-
@sergioad I tried some Genesis ROM's I got off my Steam collection and they work fine, and the system itself runs almost as cool as a stone so I must have done something right and my first attempt at making a Pi 4 PC too. 2 fans, one intake, one exhaust, and it's very quiet so the people who made the hardware obviously knew what they were doing.

Hey guys,
Just updated to 4.7 since I have a couple of days off, and, of course, now it seems like I have to readjust everything... -_-
Before I start readjusting every single games, can anyone share what you had to readjust and, if possible, a simple way to do it?
So far, it seems like the video output option has changed for every games (they are now showing in a bottom left small box on my screen) and for some reason it seems that my controller does not work on PSX anymore...
Any advice or reference would be welcomed!
Thx

@nakynaw i would start a new thread for troubleshooting, but sounds like this issue: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/issues/3118 - if so, use a different emulator
-
How do you think N64 could run over LR + Vulkan?
-
Apologies if this has already been discussed but...
I've been trying out the settings roslof put in his spreadsheet for various games, but I've resolved to using GlideN64 in place of the hires variant because none of the games I've tried have run very well. DK64 for instance is stutter city with GlideN64-hires but works perfectly in base Glide. I was just wondering if there were any specific settings you guys were using to make it run properly?
My pi is overclocked per roslof's recommendations as well. Running the latest versions of everything, that I can see.
-
@akatoosh are you sure you're using NTSC ROMs? Or PAL?
-
@roslof I'm using NTSC roms

Okay, it (your example of DK64) runs very well for me with hires, so here are my relevant settings:
https://pastebin.com/eL6dZhHvAlso note in my compatibility list how to create an entry to handle the follow-cam issue).
Hope this helps!
-
@roslof Thanks! Oddly everything seems to match up. Maybe I’ll try a different rom. Did you set the resolution to 640x480 in the runcommand menu?
-
@akatoosh no, I just leave it at default.
Reminds me... Might you be running in 4K? Or did you update config.txt to lock 1080P? -
@roslof yeah, I did change it to 1080p, so I guess resolution isn’t the issue.
-
@roslof I’m also seeing that while playing Mario Party 3 the tiles and character models are missing in-game. Not sure if this is a me thing or what, but I’m following the emulator recommendation and settings from the spreadsheet. Maybe something to do with the FB setting?

No, it's not just you. You're correct about the issue with Next, but it's not due to the FrameBuffer. You could use lr-mupen64plus instead of next. The characters will render and tiles will be correctly placed.. Even with Framebuffer False. Will update the compatibility chart to reflect this. Cheers!

@roslof Cool. The same issue is happening in Mario Party 2 as well, though in the plus emulator the HUD flickers for me a little bit.
