How long does experimental packages update take?

Last night around 7pm I started doing the experimental packages update on my Raspberry Pi3. It's now been overnight 12+ hours later and its still performing the update?

It looks like it is still downloading and installing. I'm wondering if it is actually completing anything...even the biggest Windows update doesn't take 12+ hours. If I reset my Pi and interrupt whatever it is doing will I break something?

@juggernautpint If you chose to 'update from source', then it will download and re-compile the package(s) selected.
Depending on how big is the package and how many you selected, then it could take a while.

You can check the progress from a SSH session, running top and checking if the CPU is utilized by the compilation process.

@mitu and just to add a lot fo experimental packages are source only so it would make sense it takes a really long time to update if there are lots of experimental packages installed.

@herb_fargus @mitu , is there any safe way/keyboard command to quit/abort the process?

Of the 2 optional packages I've installed so far, I opted for a Source install, and the process took less than 20 mins.

Not knowing how long these experimental ones took, I chose Source as usual, and it's still installing after an hour (with possibly many more after that). I'd like to stop it, delete what it's done and just settle on Binary for now.

Been pressing F4 (which I had understood to be a quit command), and it's still going.

I don't wanna just unplug the Pi and risk damaging it, but at this point I really don't know to do. :(

@mortalwombat Please don't necro-post. Some experimental packages take a very long time, depending on how powerful your platform is - lr-mame could take more than 1 day on a Pi3. You can interrupt the installation with Ctrl+C.

@mitu my apologies for resurrecting an old post, after this Source Install started taking far longer than past efforts lead me to expect and I was frantically Googling for a kill command lest I unplug and damage the Pi, this thread came up (albeit as a belated warning). I'll definitely save that command and know to just settle on a Binary (or overnight) install moving forward... especially with these experimental packages!
