Display current date and time inside of theme.

Not sure if there is a way currently or if this can be added.
Would be nice to have the date and time somewhere in the theme. In the process of making a Dreamcast Mini and using the Dreamcast main menu as the basis of my systems menu. See images. The top is from the Dreamcasts actual menu. The bottom is my "homage" to it in my systems menu. -
There currently is not a way of adding this to themes.
I know devs have talked about the time function being added previously but nothing materialised from my knowledge.
I would second this though as it would be a great feature for themes, especially more modern ui's.
Maybe pegasus frontend has this feature, have you tried asking in the pegasus post?
-
@paffley I did not. I have played with Pegasus in the past but not much lately. Maybe it's time to revisit it.
-
The batocera "fork" of emulationstation does implement a display time feature. It is hardwired to be displayed in the lower right corner if enabled.
However, I am not aware of previous pro/cons discussions of implementing it in the retropie's emulationstation.
-
@pythonli the pi doesn’t have a RTC unless you add one anyway, makes me wonder though if implementing that could happen eventually.
-
An RTC (real time clock) would require a persistent Internet connection on the Pi which doesn't work with many setups.
-
@iandaemon said in Display current date and time inside of theme.:

Not really, just like a PC, you can add a dedicated RTC to the GPIO header, one like this.
-
@mitu You're right. If you add an RTC to your Pi you could get away without a persistent Internet connection. I guess my post was confusing. (Without an RTC would require an Internet connection each time the Pi is turned on.) I apologize for confusing the issue.
-
@iandaemon I’m guessing getting it to work within EmulationStation would be the hardest part.
-
Why don't you just use the "X GAMES AVAILABLE" text instead (as a workaround if you want to make it for the ES so badly)?
I think Pegasus is currently the only theme where the date can be shown (as evidenced in SwitchOS):
If you want to make a 2nd edition for Pegasus, that would also be cool.
-
I just found out the Batocera fork of EmulationStation has a built-in clock (bottom-right):

@h2805270 welcome to this thread. FWIW I noted this 10+ days before.
Nice display, thanks anyway.

@iandaemon
I just found out someone posted an Alimentation Schematic/PCIB plan for it online for a USB version of it, but nobody bothered to make one yet for some reason:https://easyeda.com/rodyne/USB_RTC-dfce249ec7af4d7380d69c51a7e2cfec
