Use a keyboard as a keyboard!

Guys,
I'm new to this so apologies if it comes across as dense. For emulators like the spectrum and amiga, I just want the keyboard to be a keyboard. But it seems like it wants to map the keyboard as a games controller.
How do I make it just a keyboard?

Configuring the keyboard in ES doesn't mean you can't use it as a keyboard in the emulators. Please add more info about your setup, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first and specify which emulators have you tried and didn't work.
