When I select a console in RetroPie, the games default to being sorted by filename. If I switch this, by pressing Select and then changing to a different sort order, the sort order seems to revert back to "by filename" as soon as I move away to a different console. Is there a way to change the default sort order? As a follow-up question, is it possible to have different default sort orders for different game lists? For example, I'd prefer games in my SNES list to be sorted alphabetically, but I'd rather have my games in a custom collection to be sorted by release date. Is something like that possible? Thanks!

In short, no. Filtering and sorting are not saved and they're reset after a restart.
