I’m brand new to all of this and purchased a PI 4 2gb with official power and hdmi cable.

I’ve installed the latest Retropie onto a brand new 64gb sd card using the image installer from raspberry.

On booting up I go to the retropie config and can here sound has a move through the menu, I then enabled SSH and uploaded a few Roms via FTP. At this point I lose sound completely from the system and have tried for hours to fix it without any luck. No sound in the menus no sound in the games.

If I format the sd and re flash the back to the beginning I get sound in the retropie config menu again but as soon as my first rom is transferred via ftp the whole thing goes mute again. Really struggling here as total newbie and completely lost. Any help would be really appreciated.

      Thank you

@gazbusola as an update, I’m again done a fresh install and had sound so this time installed a new theme from es themes in the menu. Again once I changed the theme sound is gone from the entire system.

@gazbusola It may be the theme that is having an unintended effect on your system. I'm not sure how copying files (ROMs) into a directory would have an effect on the audio settings. What theme are you trying to use? Does carbon work initially?

@iandaemon thanks for the reply, yes carbon does work but then that also stops as soon as I upload a rom. I am actually thinking it could be either my new PI is faulty or the new HDMI cable. If I flash a new retropie image it works, then I upload anything at all and it stops working. If I then change the HDMI port on my tv it works again! But upload a rom without touching any cables and it stops. Change HDMI port on tv and sound is back. Totally driving me mad!

@gazbusola Hmm, I'd start with borrowing a different HDMI cable to test. It may be a faulty cable.

Are you transferring files wirelessly? (ssh/wifi) Are you removing/reinserting the SD card? It may be faulty hardware with or a loose connection.

(I'm assuming that you're using audio from the HDMI and not the 3.5mm jack.)

@iandaemon I was transferring files via ftp on ssh (laptop on wifi, pi on ethernet). I’ve tried a different sd card and still the same so have ordered a new hdmi cable coming today to try that. If not I guess it’s the Pi itself. If I change themes I also lose the sound as well. I do now believe it’s hardware issue, still driving me mad! Thanks again for replying.
