Mame2010 or Mame2016 romset, which one should I keep?

I have limited space on my HDD. I have a complete set of Mame2003 plus that I plan to use on RetroPie. I also have complete set of both Mame2010 and Mame2016. I don't want to keep both romset on my HDD and waste a lot of storage space for nothing. Could anyone suggest which romset should I keep for future use?

@kenmetro Depends on what pi you have. If you have a pi4, I recommend you use fbneo for most games. Whatever games that doesn't run or runs slow, use one of the mame's. I want the most accurate emulation possible so I start from 2016 and work my way down if a game's too slow. If you're limited on space then you should never use complete arcade romsets...

@darksavior FBNeo is such a complete arseache for control remapping, though, and doesn't have high score saving.

I use mame2003plus as the base for that reason, and then switch in individual ROMs from other sets when needed. Obviously that doesn't help you if you're short on HDD space (who's short on HDD space these days?) and don't want to keep two full sets, but it really shouldn't be that hard to download any individual 2016 ROMs from [not naming websites] as and when you need them, because I'd say it's no more than 1% that are playable on a Pi but don't run well in 2003+.

@superfella agree with the input-mapping compared to the possibilities pure mame offers.
But in the end retroarch is responsible for that, FBNEO just uses what the underlying RA offers.

But highscores are saved in most cases, and even if there is a game that does not save higscores, the active user and member of the FBNEO-Dev-Team "barbudreadmon" is very helpful and acitvates the highscores in just a couple of hours.

Plus...it is the only arcade-core that supports Retro-Achievements, once you are used to it you will never want to live without them ;)

I build a PC powered arcade cabinet using 0.215 romset. I chose the pc route because Pi 4 not support Retropie back then in early 2020, but I already had a complete romset of Mame 2003plus, 2010, and 2016. I'm not using any at the moment on my PC. I may or may not build another arcade cabinet with Raspberry Pi, so I don't want to keep all those romset to waste too much of my HDD space (roughly 250GB). I plan to keep MAME2003 plus for sure, but not want to keep both 2010 or 2016 romset for no reason. If what you said is true about those 2010 and 2016 romset have no more than 1% that are playable on a Pi, maybe I should ditch both of them out ??? Probably by the time I build a cabinet with Retropi, it may have Raspberry Pi 5 or 6 version.

FBNeo is designed to be fully plug'n'play with standard controllers, most people won't need to remap anything. Sadly i can't do much about the remapping limitations of retroarch for people who aren't using standard controllers, MAME is indeed more flexible on that point.

The part about not saving hiscores is just plain wrong, most games have hiscore support, and as @sirhenrythe5th mentioned i can add more hiscore support on request.

@kenmetro @kenmetro I would buy a external hard drive and save those roms because Nintendo going after Video game emulation all the time. As for keeping a romset on your setup, I would go with the Mame version that has worked better on your RPI4.

There are tools to verify and organize rom sets so you dont get a bunch of hacks, clones, Unl stuff you dont want. Are you using Non-merged, Split, or Merged sets?

Keeping on-point, when possible, 2016 should trump 2010. For one thing, you could 7zip 2016 ROMsets and they'll work nicely. If you have any questions about compatibility, refer to my Arcade Recommendations List. You'll note that lr-fbneo is highly recommended, but you'll also note 2016 vs. 2010 compatibility for other ROMsets.

Hope this information is useful. It is also highly optimized, in case you just don't want multiple variations of some of your games. Or don't care about the 300+ Mahjong games, or gambling/casino games.
