Is there a maximum GB sized MicroSD that the Pi can handle??
-
Hello playas, my apologies in advance if this question has already been answered here (while searching I saw similar subjects and didn't wanna risk necro-posting/reviving a months-old topic; I also haven't been on here for a bit so I may have missed some stuff...):
For any of you gamers who are trying to keep your Pi portable/not connected to an external drive, have you experienced any maximum GB size that the MicroSD cards can be?? (and yes, I'm already anticipating some "size" jokes on here, but hey...).
Reason I ask is, I was thinking of getting a separate MicroSD card exclusively for some of the larger, several hundred-MB CD-ROM games, like the PS1, Turbografx-CD, SegaCD etc.
Though I currently have a 128gig card that's been able to fit a lot of console and arcade games, I realize that 3 CD-ROMs worth of Final Fantasy-whatever can eat up that kinda space pretty quickly.
Just ask cuz I seem to recall seeing on here before that people had been having trouble with their Pi's handling any MicroSDs larger than 256GB (and I know that MSD's go up to twice that if not more). Just don't wanna waste $ buying something that my Pi4 may potentially not be able to recognize/read.
Anyone w/ any insight into this, I'd love to hear from. Thanks!

I'm using a 512GB SDcard with my Pi4 without any problems. I hope that helps.
Making backups is a pita, though... ;) -
The Pi 4 you can go over 1Tb without problems - see https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/sd-cards.md.
My advice would to use an external USB flash drive though, it's easier to take backups (of the sdcard or the ROMS) and to transfer files to/from it.

@ecto , @mitu , thank you both for chiming in (guess I can now look into adding some MSD options to the old Amazon Shoppin' Cart...).
Since I'm gonna assume that "pita" is some slang for "difficult" that ain't caught on in my limited circles yet Ecto, are you implying that making backups using the Connect to Server option is more difficult using w/ an SDcard of that size? Do larger SDs somehow give you difficulty if you use like a desktop/laptop as a go-between then backup to an external drive??
Appreciate the advice, Mitu (and yes, your warnings before about not necro-postin' made me think twice about just trying to piggyback this question onto an old topic...). TBT, before you guys told me about that aforementioned Connect To Server option, I had actually been using a USB drive to connect to the Pi to transfer ROMs over, but since then, I've just been DL'ing/dropping files directly into the server off my lappy.
So you're saying that you've found reliable flash drives offering good GB size and durability?? (mainly ask cuz w/ all the moving parts FDs likely have, I seem to have had more of those fail/stop mounting than I've had w/ MSDs (although frankly that could just be a matter of me not investing in a better brand, so any rec's are welcome...)

PITA is an acronym for 'pain in the rear', which is close to 'difficult'. What @ecto meant is that, if you use the backup method 1 from the documentation, which creates an image from the sdcard, then the image will be as large as the card. This means a lot more time to create/restore a full backup and also that you need to have enough space to store it on your PC/disk/etc.

@mitu geez that was quite a fast reply/clarification, no sooner had I walked away from my comp/posting then I realized I'd been remiss in not asking another even more pertinent question:
Have you all had any/many MicroSDs you were using on your Pis FAIL? (I'm guessing there are some informatively depressing threads here that can share some stories about as much...?).
At the end of the day, perhaps whatever larger MSD I get for these CDROM games (granted, I guess we'll see how many of them have stood the test of time to be worth keeping), ideally I may even have enough space on it to also fit what's on my current 128gb, who knows (and in turn, likely another 512gb/whatever to back THAT one up).
Ultimately, memory is never quite as pricy as the time spent collecting it...
