        Thanks for advise.

Would you know if after using the retropie update setup script then updating all core and main packages if I would benefit still from all the changes listed on the website below.

Yes, of course. That's how updates work.

Not done an update before, mainly stuck to full installs when the package changes - Jessie to Buster etc - I have the latest 4.7.1 version running at the moment. My question is probably one that is a bit simple, but if i was to upgrade to 4.8, would it be via the set up menu, and would it overwrite the roms folder effectively getting rid of all my precious games/scrapes/configs and settings??

            Thanks in advance

@Impman66 You should check the documentation. It won't remove anything. https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/

, there may be some minor defaults that are better with a clean install (RetroArch's RGUI), but other than that you're all set.

just for interest: why is Retroarchs RGUI better with a clean install?

@mitu the default one, i never changed the colors or used the GUI-Options like starfield in background etc.

I guess i dont know what you mean at all :D
First i thought it is concerned to the new "dynamic RGUI", but this has just been available in 1.10.1 and AFAIR Retroarch got updated to 1.10.0 in Retropie-Setup 4.8.
So i dont understand why the RGUI should be better/different with a clean install than with just updating it from an existing 4.7.x?

If you didn't change it through the conf, then upgrading in place would get you the same thing. I'm referring to the checkered-box pattern being disabled and font shadow (the new defaults).

I have look on github......and this version as been released about 8 days ago.
It's the version it's been upgraded but the binary report a wrong version ?

Thanks I was just wondering as improved features like Bluetooth update in the release notes I was not sure if that would be working with just updating retropie setup script , core and main packages or if it was needed to use the update option in retropie setup.

After updating retropie setup script it shows 4.8 and core packages it shows the latest emulationstation same version as in the latest changes.

All seems good from the quick testing ive done.

                              Thanks

@Simrose let me understand..... you have upgrade right now and you have emulationstation correctly reported as 2.10.2 ?

Maybe i need to re-install emulationstation from binary to fix this inconsistency on my pi4 ?

                                  Yes thats correct v2.10.2
                                  and Retroarch v1.10.0
I went to retropie setup and updated the retropie setup script. I then updated the core and main packages.
restarted the system and checked in emulationstation the version number and its on 2.10.2

I am just now wondering about the following
Improved joystick support in RetroPie-Setup dialogs.
Improvement to RetroPie package management and updating.
Improvements to handling of dkms drivers.
bluetooth – various fixes and improvements
If these improvements would only be included if you run the retropie update option.

                                  Thanks

So the updates i mentioned above would of been included in the 4.71 image or by updating the setup script.

@mitu i have right now turn on my Pi4.
Open "Retropie-setup" and update my script to current commit (2d07a999).

                                            After that i did:

                                            • Manage -> Core -> and select "Update all installed core".
I can't find any updates. So exit from retropie-setup and emulationstation still at 2.10.1 :)

At this point i have tryed to update emulationstation manually.... i did:
                                            Manage -> Core -> Select "Emulationstation" - > re-installed manually from binary

Now need to check if it's correctly updated :)

                                            EDIT
OOOOKKK... my ES been updated to v2.10.2 whitout any issue.
