Emulationstation crashes (Raspberry Pi3)

Hey there,

I am having some issues with Retropie on my raspberryPi3(1gb RAM). 3 out of 5 times the emulationstation crashes on startup, I have set my GPU-Memory to 512 and I use the carbon theme.
I have my roms on a seprate USB-Stick.
I ran out of ideas on how to fix the crashes, can anyone help me, or have some ideas?

That's too much and doesn't get you any advantage, you should retain the defaults set by RetroPie (256Mb).

I have my roms on a seprate USB-Stick.

How did you set this up ? The crashes may be caused by the USB stick not being available in time for EmulationStation start.

Okay, I will reset it to the default values!
I followed the instructions for transfering roms to a USB-Stick, so I have the "retropie-mount" - folder on my USB-Stick, with all the different emulator-subfolder which contains the roms.

Hm, I also used a different USB-Stick for my Rom's...
But when I disconnect the USB-Stick, the boot-up almost function perfectly.

Ok, you are using the automatic method from the docs. Try using the manual method described there - you only need to do fstab configuration step, since everything else has been set-up.

@mitu Hey Mitu,
I used fstab to automatically mount the USB-Drive- this doesn't help.
But I noticed, when the Arcade Controller are disconnected from the Pi, the bootup is much faster and there aren't any crashes anymore.
I use the Fosiya Arcade buttons and joysticks, in Emulationstation they are recognized with: Dragonrise Inc. Generic USB.
Is this a common problem with these controllers? And how do I fix it?

It's either a power problem - if the disc is not powered individually - or the USB detection is slow because of the number of devices attached.

Try adding the mount command in the autostart.sh file (in /opt/retropie/configs/all), before the line that starts emulationstation.

The file should contain:

mount -o <mount_options_from_fstab>  /dev/sda1 /home/pi/RetroPie
emulationstation #auto

Then remove or comment the line from /etc/fstab that you added and reboot.

@mitu Thanks for your answer, i figured it out what was the problem.
During the pandemic the manufacture of my controller boards changed some parts on the controller boards that causes these crashes.
I found a fix online where you have to add this line to the end of the /boot/cmdline.txt
usbhid.quirks=0x0079:0x0006:0x00000400

after a reboot, my emulationsstation never crashed again, I hope this will help someone who has the same problem.

@Manukan Ahoy .. I see that the topic is old, but i have going back and forth trying to fix the crash that occurred on my Rp48gb .. I have 2 projects mem card with retropie and o e with emulationstation...
The first works great no problems .. But the second crashes after the boot... I have tried everything that is here and there (all tricks and tips) but with no results...
Finally i decide to try something random that i didnt saw in any forum - ** i have connected the raspberry pi to another tv (the main one was 55in, the second one is 10in and for my surprise it runs without problem)**

So i have no idea did i discovered the hot water... But at least that can save a few ours of pointless wandering around the forums.

If there is fix for thah to be ok with higher resolution so it wont crashes on 55in tv let me know, thanks !
