I've intermittently tried to get this machine running for ages, largely to play its superb Pang port and the brilliant homebrew remake of Ghosts'n'Goblins, but never had much luck.

Last night it was behaving very weirdly - using the lr-mess-gx4000 and lr-mess-system-gx4000-cart forks, the exact same game would crash back to EmulationStation one time, then work perfectly seconds later, then crash if I tried to load it again. It made no difference if I was using my standard ROMs or the MESS-specific set with 8-character ZIP filenames.

But then I noticed something about the GX4000 game carts' boxes:

and it occurred to me to try installing the lr-mess-system-cpc6128p-cart fork instead. And hey presto, complete success. Every game I've tried runs flawlessly every time, including all of CPCWiki's unofficial CPC-to-GX4000 ports.

So that's a good thing, right?

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

@JimmyFromTheBay Very interesting! I'd like to give this a try as well. How do I install lr-mess-system-cpc6128p-cart?

It's super-easy, see the first post here:
