Please advise, After initial start, I get the following prompt to login on the Game Console. When I connect an external keyboard, it won't let me type in the login user id and password. I have thoroughly searched forums and can't figure out how to do this. The console came with a 64 gb preloaded with various emulators.2.jpg

Re: Asking for retropie login on boot? (after update)

I have a Raspberry console with SD card and am getting this prompt. I tried to use external keyboard via USB ports and couldn't type anything.

      Please help.

@JoshStl77 What's the prompt, it's just a photo of the Pi? Can you type anything at all?

Third party images and pre-configured setups are not supported here. Install an official image and then you can get support.

@sirhenrythe5th He could have a bad keyboard or full drive, for example, rather than jump to conclusions.

                  @smartgenes whatever, Thorr is right.
As stated in the rules https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first 3rd party/preloaded images are not supported here.
                  There is no exception.
In the end we dont know what has been modified in these images and no one wants to guess.
Besides of that it is illegal to sell retropie anyhow - and offering them preloaded with roms doesnt make it better.

Use the official image or ask the seller, this is all we can offer as support here.

I didn't jump to conclusions. I quoted his own post where he said it was a pre-configured system:

                    Rule number 5 states:

Make sure you are using an official image, or have done a manual install yourself. We will not support 3rd party images.

To the extent that this person 'searched' for an answer in the forum, I have some doubts. A simple search provided me with the default login credentials (pi/raspberry) quite quickly. But, the fact that they can't get a keyboard to function when attached means they can't even get that far. If the system won't accept a standard keyboard then it has greater problems and would require delving. That goes beyond simplicity and from that point out, a non-standard (pre-configured) image is just not supportable.

I never had issue with the keyboard so far(3 different). It was always working in terminal console. So, the problem is somewhere else. Try with the official Iso that you can download from this site or try a different keyboard.

@windg Either the keyboard is not working (either software or hardware issue) or, if they can type, I suspect they might have a full sd card, which would get stuck in a login loop. Just a theory...

@smartgenes The prompt is retropie: ~ $ _ ....above it gives me the instructions to enter in the username and password, but when I connect an external keyboard to the console, it won't let me type anything.

@JoshStl77 I would check the keyboard is working on another machine/ try a different keyboard. Also try obvious stuff like switching the USB port. Pis are pretty resilient, I once had one on fire after I plugged in something far over voltage and it still worked afterward, so I doubt a fault with the port but you never know.

There is something in what they say about using a reliable/supported build. On the other hand, that's not that useful to you right now as you clearly would want to get this working. You'll want to google Raspberry Pi and SSH, which you will probably want to use at some stage anyway and might help you access the roms if you don't manage the keyboard problem and which you could put on another card with a supported build.

This type of finger wagging because they're narked someone is making money from roms is neither here nor there. Typically they're more than ready to help someone with more advanced questions but I see many basic questions on this forum just ignored, really out of arrogance, because they think the user hasn't made an effort or it's not an interesting issue... But everyone has different levels. I don't like people selling stuff that could be built by the user either, but the fact they sell shows that it is not as easy for some users as they think.

writing an image to a SD-Card and copying some files to it is not easy?
                              Harvard only? :D
Sorry, but who is not able to do this should better buy a Nintendo.

It is lazyness. "I want a retroconsole. Oh, but i dont want to do anything for this, gimme a plug&play unit!"

Things get more difficult if you don't read the wiki or if you don't provide the important information about the system where the problem exists.
I made the same mistake the first time I tried RetroPie , I found it all very complicated, but they wasn't.
