Hi folks. I'm having some trouble getting BFD to run smoothly and I was hoping to get your help.

Some background -- I'm running RetroPie x86 on Linux (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) and can't get it to run smoothly. Also, the aspect ratio is always 16:9 despite setting it to 4:3

    Hardware: Intel NUC (NUC6i7KYK)

    • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6770HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz
    • Graphics: Iris Pro Graphics 580
    • Memory: 8GiB (2x4GiB) 2133 DDR4 SODIMM
    • SSD: ADATA SX6000NP 256GB NVMe

    RetroPie Version: 4.8
Built From: Fresh Ubuntu 22.04 LTS install via terminal
    USB Devices connected:

    • Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows
    • Logitech K400 Plus keyboard (Unifying USB receiver)

Controller used: Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
    Emulator: mupen64plus-glide64 (default)

Of all the cores available, I've found that mupen64plus-glide64 runs the smoothest. However, I've found that there's significant slowdown and stutter during parts of the game with lots of assets on screen. I was wondering if anyone would know what settings I could tweak to get it to run a bit more smoothly? Or if there are settings for the other cores I could use to get better performance out of them?

Also, with mupen64plus-glide64, the aspect ratio is always stretched to 16:9 regardless of any settings I change to make it 4:3. The other cores don't seem to do this. They all play the game with black bars on the side, which I would rather have over stretching it.

Any help or nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Are you using the standalone emulator or the libretro Mupen64 core ? There's no mupen64-glide64 core for libretro, it's either lr-mupen64plus (deprecated) or lr-mupen64plus-next (recommended).
What's the resolution of your display ?

@mitu Thanks for the reply. I apologize, I'm rather new to using RetroPie on Ubuntu. I was just going by what the default value was on the emulator selection screen when you press a button while the ROM is launching.

I ended up installing lr-mupen64plus-next as you suggested, and the difference is amazing :) This is what I was hoping for. Thanks!
