@vg001 just 2 things that come in my mind reading your log:

        • mslug5h is not the parent romset. I dont know if you have this one in a merged version, but if your rom has the size of 2.2MB: you cannot run it without the parent romset (=mslug5.zip, not mslug5h.zip)

        • i never used MAME2003, but it seems that MAME2003 does not support this rom ("Game driver not found for mslug5h!"). I prefer to use "FBNEO" for NeoGeo-Roms, this great emulator also supports al lot of hacks an various other versions of the NeoGeo-Romset.
Maybe you give it a try, it is allready installed by default in official retropie.

Def use some version of lr-FBNeo (formely FBA) for Neo Geo.
Also, Neo-Geo requires BIOS, (if unsure Google it!) in the bios folder.
I usually chuck the neogeo.zip bios in the neogeo (or Arcade) rom folder aswell, for good measure...

when you finally get your Metal Slug games up n running, you're probably going to be dissapointed to find out theres no blood, just sweat! :(

You can then press A+B+C + Start button (ingame) to access the dip switches.
From there you can go to soft dip / cabinet settings and enable blood, difficulty, lives etc. Good luck.

@Dipkid said in how to run NEO-GEO games?:

You can then press A+B+C + Start button (ingame) to access the dip switches.

By default the hotkey to enter the MVS-Servicemenu ist holding "START" while the game is running (as far as lr-FBNEO is concerned).
You may have changed that, which is possible in Retroarch / Core-Options, but atm @vg001 will have to hold the START-Button to enter the Dip-Switches to activate Blood in Metal-Slug (or Samurai Shodown :D)

Yip certain games require seperate Bios NeoGeo being one of those types, for the record MAME2003+ supports Metal Slug 5
