Pi Model or other hardware: 4 4GB
Power Supply used: Raspberry Pi 15W USB-C Power
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): 4.8.6
Built From: edit raspberry pi imager berryboot
USB Devices connected: 3rd party xbox controller, keyboard, mouse
Controller used: 3rd party xbox one controller
      Error messages received: NA
      Verbose log (if relevant): NA
Guide used: (Mention if you followed a guide)
File: (File with issue - with FULL path)
Emulator: (Name of emulator - if applicable)
Attachment of config files: (PLEASE USE PASTEBIN.COM FOR LARGE LOGS)
      How to replicate the problem:

I am trying to boot directly to emulation station. I have used the retropie script to boot to kodi/emulationstation like the docs say. On my build the pi would boot to the desktop environment no matter what I did with the retropie script.

I used this to stop it from booting to the desktop environment

      sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target

now it boots to the terminal, and this is prolly why it goes to terminal.

      can anyone help?

We don't have a Berryboot image available - which image did you use to install RetroPie ?

Use the 'autostart' configuration menu and set EmulationStation to start on boot. See https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#how-do-i-boot-to-the-desktop-or-kodi.

Hi, I'm sorry I did not use berry boot. I used pi imager on Windows to write an SD card image.

When I use the retropie config script and go to the auto start, I do not have options that are shown on the FAQ. I only has

1 Autostart Emulation Station after login (Enabled)

When I try to manually edit Autostart.sh the file is not there. Here is a list of the files in the /all/ directory.

          peeweejd@rasperrypi:/opt/retropie/configs/all $ ls
          autoconf.cfg retroarch.cfg runcommand.cfg
          autoconf.cfg.backup retroarch.cfg.bak runcommand-launch-dialog.cfg
          emulationstation retroarch-core-options.cfg skyscraper
          retroarch retroarch-joypads skyscraper.cfg
          peeweejd@raspberrypi:/opt/retropie/configs/all $

Which image did you write ? The RetroPie image already has autostart pre-configured.

I just looked at the Raspberry Pi Imager and there is no way to tell what I did a few days ago, but I did choose all the recommended stuff. It looks like is would be Raspberry PiOS 64bit the 2023-12-05 release. I don't recall any errors during installation but I'm not really a Linux guy.

Is there a way just re-install everything over top of the existing SD card?

Support for latest RasPi OS is still beta, I recommend you install the RetroPie image directly (which can be chosen from the Imager) and not RasPi OS.
