I am currently running, RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi 4 8Gb,
This will go into a DIY cabinet, 2 payer setup. Late 80's Early 90's emulation.

The cabinet has to fit into the main living area aesthetics so will be mostly natural pine look, but I aim to include a LED Matrix display for cabinet and game playing art.

I am aware of Pixelcade which I found on this forum initially looking into options. Due to location and exchange rates and already having P4 80*40 panels (qty), I am looking for an alternative. Or at least exploring options before going that route, (getting the pixelcade board only, would double my current spend cost, which comes with the caveat it may or may not work nicely with my current panels)

Running on a test pi, (rpi3) I can drive the panels using rpi-rgb-led-matrix. I found youtube video of a German guy using this on a pi but getting the art of a PC running Mame.

Has anyone tried the same with Retropie, to the rpi-rgb-led-matrix either on same or external pie, (I suspect the latter due to memory/resources use)?

It should work on RetroPie also, the project page reports that 'up to Pi4' models are supported.

@mitu yeah the LED matrix should work, just looking at pointers on how to trigger the right image (if available) or default image, to be loaded.

I may have to find some time to crash-course myself into a new skill...

If you have a script that loads an image, then you can tie it with EmulationStation's scripting support and invoke the image loading when appropriate - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/EmulationStation/#scripting.
