Pi 4 4GB & 4k 60
-
Hi all
I just bought a Pi 4 cheap and i just assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it would run Retro Pie at 4k just fine (menus and up to ps1?)
Turns out even the menus are laggy at 4k on a fresh install. Did i assume wrongly, is the Pi 4 no good for 4k?
Thanks

Indeed. This very forum is rather voluminous in posts that say you need to drop your resolution down to 1080p. You will get stuttering, tearing, and frame rate issues if you stay at 4K.

By default, the Pi4 boots with 4k@30hz so the ES will display in low motion. You need to add an extra option to
config.txt
to make it work at 4k@60hz at boot. However, playing games at full 4k@60hz will be a bit of a stretch, but you can choose a lower resolution from the
runcommand
menu when starting a game. -
@mitu Damn i see... not sure why i assumed it would run games at 4k... very dumb of me.
If i set it to 4k60 will that improve the menu response? I didn't think 30hz refresh would cause that effect. I have it at 1080p now as its smooth but the whole of this was to get 4k on old games haha.
Big time fail on my part.

Yes, but you may have to increase the VRAM amount allocated to textures from the ES menu in order to accomodate the increased resolution.

@mitu I set hdmi_enable_4kp60=1 and made the VRAM 512mb as i have 4gb and that should be plenty to play with
Now the menu is slightly choppy but not too terrible and games up to PS1 are playing fine at 4k60 N64 i expect would be the limit but honestly I only want to get to PS1 and it's doing that so this is awesome :D
