RetroPi has DOSBox, but most DOS games need a keyboard.

Has anyone curated a collection of DOSBox games that can run on RetroPie with a controller only?

I like playing those type of DOS games through Ports instead. Ports automatically (well, at least for games like Doom/Quake/Duke Nukem 3d/Wolfenstein 3d at least) maps a Playstation/Xbox type controller to the controls half way decently. I can't stand how the fire/shoot button is a face button (think "X" or "B"?) instead of a trigger button since you're using both analog sticks to move around so you can't move and fire at the same time....but it's still better than I've been able to map joysticks to in DOSbox without spending hours on it...

The Alone in the Dark trilogy works great! Also Commander Keen and anything side view for the most part. It's been a while since I've played with DOSbox, else my memory would be more fresh.

Hit F1 while in the game. You can make about anything work with the controller.

Any DOS game that supported the Gravis Gamepad would be a good place to start.

@dudleydes That MobyGames search will be really useful to try and put together games to put on my RetroPie!

@enderandrew hitting control and f1 brings up dosbox's keyboard config where you can set any key to your controller. You need a mouse hooked up to use it though.

Has anyone tried one of those xbox or ps3 add on keyboards that click onto the bottom of the remote? Not sure if it will even work with RetroPie or if its just to small to be useful. I dont mean as a controller but for basic shortcuts some games use or for word input on some games.
