i use the x264 codec with 640x480 for all videos. I have the same case and no overclocking.
now with heatsink 65-70´C -
@GtBFilms Nice, i'm happy you finally you got it working, when I have time I want to make a little tutorial to automate the process for the gamelist and I want to upload optimized art that fix in the theme.

New little update for oldroom theme:
- added Game boy system.
- added Game boy Color system. (I need better gbc image for this theme).
- Fixed detailed view.
Somebody have a Game boy Color and can make a photo holding it in his hand?

Sorry @fieldofcows this time i didn't have time to provide an 800x600 fix but i'll do soon.
I can't make work marquee on top of "rating" on detailed view, i'm not sure if can't be possible on detailed view or it's my fault.

Marquee was something I added for the video view. Maybe it makes sense to support this in the detailed view as well.

- Fixed gbc system_art image was not in 720p for 720p version..
- Fixed gbc system_art image was not in optimized for 1080p version.

Seeing as we've had a couple of testers now and I've performed a good amount of testing myself (including a 8 hour soak test of playing videos non-stop) I've submitted a PR to RetroPie ES for this change.
If this get's pulled into the mainline ES for RetroPie then hopefully we'll see even more themes with video support :)

@fieldofcows Nice, I hope you have no problem and your commits can be merged, but if not don't worry, i'll port any theme people want to video support if creator give me permission.
It's not difficult and it's relatively fast to do.

all: Video preview has been merged, and Emulation Station binaries have been updated. You will need to update the retropie-setup script before updating Emulation Station to pull in the new dependencies (or use update all packages which does this automatically).

@fieldofcows So what is you next step? Going to take a well deserved Holliday Christmas vacation? Maybe having a crack at solving the white screen of death? Or maybe having a look at implement what @Zigurana started with kids mode?
Sorry to lay all these suggestions on you but from my point of view and others I'm sure of. It looks like you know what your doing and doing it damn well i might say!

Haha! I do this for fun so you can expect to see more output over the Christmas period!
I have a couple of tested features already lined up:
- Random video from the gamelist as a screensaver
- Play sound when switching systems
After that I'm looking for work. I might give the white screen of death a go. I haven't seen it myself but I think I can see where the problem lies and a potential fix.
I know @Nismo would love me to make some metadata file path improvements :)

@fieldofcows Don't worry don't get hurry for me, because since i'm working in themes, it's faster for me to disable "save metadata on exit", that way emulationstation open and close faster.
I think you must fix video transparency bug in Rpi before anything else... but it's just my humble opinion.
About white screen of death: There is a fundamental bug with EmulationStation where unique background images are not loaded dynamically so if you have more than ~10 systems (on most themes that have a unique wallpaper per system) you will start to get a white screen of death and nothing will show up.

The one where the video was tinted blue? That's already fixed and was included in the PR.

I have a little request, i notice that some images was stretched when i ported pixel theme, so doesn't look good (for example if you use 3d box instead of screenshots). So it's possible for "if no video show image" tag, the image can keep aspect ratio?
I mean if the width of the image it's bigger than heigh then fit to width of video box, if heigh it's bigger than width then fit to heigh of video box, but not stretching the image.
